Well the old 90' Legacy LS MT I have is on it's last legs, after 305k miles and 3 seperate fender benders, she's on her way to the great highway in the sky (mostly for cosmetic reasons). So what's that mean? New Project Time! I picked up a 93 legacy wagon 4EAT for pretty cheap do to the back window being busted out by the dude's 9 yr old. And I was wondering if anyone has any experience removing the back window from my 90 and letting the folks at an auto glass shop install it on the 93. Also a few other issues it has are, hazard/signal lights dont flash, and the speedometer/odometer no longer work and it throws a CEL. Thanks in advance!

Well not specific experience of removing the back window from a Subie, but I have seen windshields removed from cars in wrecking yards by workers. The used piano wire they inserted from outside the car, by drilling a hole in the weather stripping. Then, inserting the piano wire. Next, the wire was tied around a wooden sticks to become handles, on both the inside and outside the car. Two guys would "saw" the wire around the window stripping, thus cutting the window out of the car. It was hard work, but it was an effective way to remove the window.

Check the fuse on the hazzard/signal lights, but perhaps you have already done this.

had a rear side window (cargo area) done on my old GL wagon once - Auto Glass Specialists did the work - $50 to take out the good glass from a parts car, $50 to install in the GL with the busted glass - total cost $100 plus taxes - and they came to me.

This was about 10 years ago, however, so cost may have gone up - doesnt hurt to call around and ask

Cool yeah I've been trying to ask around, just gotta give them a ring during their business hours, which unfortunately doesn't include weekends.

Yeah I checked the fuses they were good. I'm thinking it's the actual flashed.

Aside from the window, how did you get your car to go 305,000 miles? I've been asking around trying to figure out what I should have done when doing my timing belt for the first time. I know water pump, and maybe tensioner, but not sure what else would be good measure, Any ideas. I have an 97 Legacy.

well the window is off of the 90 legacy which is the one that went 305k I just bought it at 240k and when I bought it I did a major tune up like replacing the timinig belt, clutch (it was a 5speed) and the water pump, replaced the spark plugs and o2 sensor sealed any exhaust leaks, and I had ShawnW reseal it externally at least (Iwas still in denver back then) . And I just did regular maintenance from there. She lasted me 4 years and 65k miles, including my move from Denver to Raleigh. I could still fix her up but the fact that she was in 3 separate accidents made her a bit ugly on the back and sides.

***EDIT***

Also anyone know what to do to fix the odo/speedometer issue? I've heard for some of the late 90s vehicles that it's usually a speed sensor?

  • 3 weeks later...

So electrical issues abound I replaced the flasher with the one off of my old subie (that was working last i checked) and still nothing. Anyone have any idea why the turn signals/hazard lights don't work? I checked the fuses and they were all good, also not sure if this is related but the cig lighter doesn't work and the speedometer/odometer do not work. I'm in a bit of a bind as NC in their wisdom give you ten days from the date of purchase to get it "Inspected" and a CEL and none working hazards will definitely fail it.

******EDIT******

So I got the Flashers/hazards working the hazard light control had come unplugged. ugh the simple things. Still wondering how to get the odometer/speedometer working though.
