Buying an Engine not installed

Recommended Posts

You would want to know when they were last running and then see if they turn over from accumulated rust on the bearings. Is there still oil in them? The rust may only show by taking the block apart. If there is rust, then they are toast.

I would ask why the thermostat housing is bad on the 1.8,  there is a reason it was messed with and all roads lead to overheating.  Subaru motors are not very forgiving after they overheat.

Rust on the bearings? I thing you mean rust in the cylinders and rings. Bearings can't rust, they are non-ferrous. The crank journals could possibly rust, but I've only seen that happen twice and both engines were stored outside, uncovered for years. Even after the engine is shut down, pulled and stored, there's still a thin layer of oil on the bearings and journals. It still seems like a good price.

Yeah I'm dealing with an EA82 that overheated right now, sent an oil sample off for testing.

Thought about getting the 2.2 to put in the Loyale...thoughts??
