darsdoug
I can't seem to find the exact number in ft.lbs. anywhere? I sure don't what them coming loose on me. I just set the intake valve lash at .008 and the exhaust valve lash at a slightly snug .011 because I didn't have a .010...Thanks.
idosubaru
since they get tighter with age the miniscule 0.001 shouldn't hurt and will be warn within limits with age anyway. i've never torqued those, just "enough", but i can understand not wanting to screw those up..or down...or too loose..or too tight... Fairtax4me
It's pretty much impossible to over tighten those with a 10mm wrench. Unless you're He-man. Then maybe. Tighten them up about as tight as you can by twisting your wrist and they won't come loose.
darsdoug
Thanks. It sure runs better now. "No more loud clicking". I did have a concern yesterday though when I first started it after it sat for a week. (Gone fishing) It sounded like a rod or main bearing knocking but it went away after three or four seconds. I checked the engine oil dipstick and it was at the full mark. First time it's ever done it and I've been driving it for a year with regular oil and filter changes. It has the Mobile 5000 10-40 wt. in it right now with a Fram filter. Would that be the debut of a failing oil pump? or something else? It didn't knock this morning when I started it. Fairtax4me
That would probably be the Fram filter. No point running synthetic oil if you run a junk filter. A plain Purolator is a huge upgrade over the best Fram. The PureOne filters are better. Wix is the best you can buy, and they're only like $8. Do you live in the desert? In most climates 10w-40 oil is too thick on start-up and takes longer for the pump to push through the oil passages in the engine. You run the bearings dry before fresh oil gets there. If you want the high temp protection of a 40 weight oil get 0(zero)w-40 synthetic. Usually doesn't cost any more than any other synthetic. But 5w-30 works just fine. I run both my ej22s (95 and 96) on 5w-30. 95 just rolled 235k. 96 is just shy of 230k miles.
darsdoug
Yes I agree Fram oil filters are junk. It troubles me our local wal-mart doesn't stock purolators for 2.2's? Every time I look for one they don't have it so I end up grabbing a Fram. If they do carry 2.2 Purolator filters they are long gone by the time I get there. This Mobile Super motor oil I'm using is just their conventional oil. Perhaps the Purolator filter numbers I got from the Bumble Beast are different than NA filters? Fairtax4me
Purolator is 14460. Walmart just plain doesn't carry them. I've asked my local Walmart if they could get them and they apparently don't have ANY control over what inventory comes into the store. All decisions of what products they normally carry are made at the corporate and distribution levels. So I buy 2 or 3 at a time from the parts store anytime I have to go there. But there's no way I'm paying $30 for a jug of Valvoline at the parts store when the exact same thing costs $17 at Walmart.
86BRATMAN
I use to have the clatter on start up with Fram filters too, I bought a box of subaru filters online a while back and problem solved. I think the case cost me around 70 with shipping, so just under $6 a piece for a true quality filter.
upnorthguy
Glad I saw this discussion about oil filters...I had a new Fram already screwed on waiting for fresh oil once I get my engine back dropped in this weekend. I picked up a PureOne Purolator ($7.19 at Adv Auto, but had 20% off code) and swapped it out. At least I only wasted a filter and not the fresh oil!
