oil filter cross referrence

so both FRAM and PUROLATOR  list multiple filters to fit gen 1,2, and 3 subarus, and they are all cross refererenced to each other .  So is using a gen 1 filter on a gen 3 motor a big deal, or does it not matter? 

 

Example FRAM lists PH2825, PH2807A , PH3682, and PH4746  as all applicable for any gen 1, 2 or 3 motor.
