phughnic
Hi all, I just bought a 94 legacy 2wd 5speed sedan with 156k. The trans has a whine in 1st and 2nd gear. I don't hear it in 3rd, 4th and 5th, and it goes away when the clutch is in. I've heard the same kind of noise in Loyales in 1st for thousands of miles (but I don't spend much time 1st). I know there are junkyard trans out there, and I'm not afraid (money wise) to buy one. I'm going to change the trans oil this afternoon and look for metal, but I haven't yet. What I want to know is how long can it last like it is, and what the likely bearing/bearings are causing it. I'm not a transmission guy, but I don't mind changing a bearing or two if I have to. Also, I thought this was a low mileage car, so if I buy a junkyard trans, what is a likely mileage that I would get a "good" one? Thanks in advance, it's a treat to ask people that know what they are talking about. Pat
86hatchback
If you need a transmission I've got one in a 93 sedan that I pulled the motor out for an ej swap, car drove great when I parted it. Located in Portland Oregon if ya need it.
Fairtax4me
Not uncommon to have a slight whine from 1 and 2 due to the size of the drive gears. I wouldn't worry about it too much for now. The fluid can look pretty grey if its been a while since it was changed last.
