joshtalo
I just bought a 96 outback legacy that needs a new trans put in. I already had a 96 outback legacy that had a blown engine, but was in a little bit better shape. I was originally going to just replace the trans, but now I'm wondering if it might be easier to put the new engine into my old vehicle? The only questions are, can I put a 2.2 into a car that previously had a 2.5? And will an engine from a manual trans car be compatible with an automatic? Any thoughts are appreciated. lmdew
Yes Plug and Play. You may have to swap the Y-pipe if one was a dual port and the other is single Port exhaust. Yes Manual and Trans engines are interchangeable you just have to swap the flywheel/flex plate over.
idosubaru
1996 is an EJ22 i'm assuming? yes it's a plug and play direct swap if you swap the engine and exhaust manifold. if the 1996 doesn't have EGR you'll have a check engine light. it doesn't effect anything but if your area has inspections/emissions you won't pass if they look for it. if it has EGR then no issues. EG25's have EGR, EJ22's in 1996 can go either way. l
johnceggleston
there is a work around for using a non-egr ej22 engine in a 2.5L car.
