RedRX
Had a wet road traffic duel the other day. Took off around a corner with a riced WRX on my tail (u know - gauges, BOV, fart-can exhaust). 1st set of lights he is in front of me and takes off on the green - I floor it (in 2WD) and spin on 1st - then 2nd - then 3rd gear before i start to move. He's miles ahead...hehe. Next set of lights and i slip into low 4WD - alongside this time. Launch..... only when I back off at 80 does he come past (BOV hissing away). I guess i caught him by surprise. RedRX - 86 RX turbo, low-comp rally built motor with 30/70 cams, running 10psi with no IC (at pres)
JonOfScio
so then, list your mods on your engine. we know you have cams, but what else about the engine? just curious. I suppose it is possible that you might have gotten away if he wasn't a good driver and had too much done to his car that he actually lost power. RedRX
Hell if I know what exactly was done to the motor - all I know is that little happens before 2500 rpm and its a dog right off idle. High tensile socketted bolts hold the heads on (aparantly forged pistons but I cant vouch for that). The engine was built up for a local Subi rally drivers son to practise with before finding its way into my car. All ancillaries are standard to bring it back to road spec for registration purposes (ie removed huge fuel rails and oversize injectors). But hey, I'm not claiming i can clean up any old car - just one particular factual event that surprised the hell outa me (and HE was sure hovering about to get a surreptitious look at my bog-standard exterior). Maybe he missed a change and bogged down....
Warp3
(aparantly forged pistons but I cant vouch for that) FYI, from what I've read the stock EA82T pistons are already forged. (Though, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this one, USMB guys...hehe)
spanky_pete
Ugh, people like that driving WRXs is such a waste. When will these people learn that BOVs are bad for their performance.
archemitis
bovs bad for performance? um... thats crazy talk, the bigger and louder the better. just cuz its got guages and a performance exhaust dont mean its riced, it means its raced! bovs only help! I hope my sarcasm meter is off today, but just in case, on a stock WRX motor a bov hurts more than helps. However on a 300+hp a BOV can be of use. archemitis
what would it hurt? a recirc valve gets stuffed up as it hits the confined intake plumbing. shooting it out into atmosphere keeps the turbo spinning faster. and if its all riced out, wouldnt it have about 300hp just with a boost controller, and exh? PeterD
you would be dumb to not run some sort of BOV on a modded wrx... if its all stock i don't see why you would need one. but if its running hi boost its good to have. imbetween shifts all that bost slamps against the trottle body, and can cause the turbo to stop spooling. a bov works when its used in the corect aplication.
