EJ22 - Is it really "All That" ?

I just finished a deal with a friend where I ended up wirh a EA82T Turbo engine (216K milrs), with ECU - pulled from a running vehicle.

 

I have another friend who wants to trade me a partly disassembled pre-'96 EJ22 (194K miles, wirh ECU) for the EA82T. The engine is in good shape, just needs the disassembly/rebuild finished (by me).

 

Should I do this trade? Is the EJ22 really "All That"? My long term plan would be to put the EJ22 into one of my pre-1987 GL wagons.

The early EJ22 is a super reliable engine. Decent fuel economy and horsepower. Yes they are all that. I still have my EA81 because it runs to good to just pull, but if I had to replace it I would be beating the woods for a early EJ22 donor car with decent motor!

I pulled the ej out of my 94 legacy at 293k. It had oil in the coolant, which I happened to notice upon a morning of pre-trip inspection as I was about to drive it up to New Hampshire from Georgia. I drove it anyway. It clocked 2600 miles there and back without issue. I was able to pick up a 150k ej in New Hampshire for $350 on a pallet ready to load up. Just threw it into the car and drove home. Swapped the motors the next weekend. The old ej I am going to use to mock up mounts for an install into my 78 brat, as soon as I locate a dual range transaxle. The old ej is awesome, and at this point I am going to snag up any parts I can find. One will eventually live in our 72 westfalia as well.

never run out of oil or overheat them and they last as long as you care to.  cheap, simple, reliable, they are excellent engines.  an EA82T is laughable compared to an EJ22.

 

**** There is a huge flag though.  A torn down EJ22 is suspect.  Since Ej22's never have issues unless they were overheated or run out of oil - what happened to this one that it needed torn down before 200k?  That's odd, I'd wonder what previous maintenance was like and whether it over heated or ran low on oil.

 

Friend found a craigslist special EJ22.  Cheap and already pulled from the vehicle.  I went to help him pull a blown EJ25 and noticed his craigslist EJ22 find had melted timing belt covers.  it had obviously been overheated.  i suggested leak down test before install.  he installed it anyway and it had rod knock....from the prior overheating.

OK.

Did the trade today. Engine appears to be 1st Generation, with 2 exhaust ports on each head and the old-style timing belt tensioner (I've been reading up!). No ECU, unfortunately... he can't find it. One head was pulled, the pistons have little "cutouts" where the valve edges go, inside of a round (squarish on one side) sculpted indent. Serial # 599xxx

This is a non-interference EJ22, yes?

Anyway, he threw in a free manual transmission with the trade... I'll get details and post them in an attempt to identify what transmission it is.

 

EDIT: Just found a tag on the transmission. It says:

Description: M.T. 4WD Transmission

Comments: 187K 1.8 MT

What is the transmission worth? Does anyone here want it?

Double check the stamp below the altenator mount.

 

That trans came with an EJ18........you may not have a 2.2. there.  they are identical on the outside except maybe an EGR pipe might indicate 1.8 vs. 2.2
