EJ-22 Year/Serial Number Mystery

Recommended Posts

Hello again.

Sudden flurry of EJ-22 engines coming my way! :)

I have a friend who is probably going to trade me a partially disassembled EJ22 for an EA82T that I have. I just talked to another friend today who has an EJ22 in a wrecked Impreza he wants to sell. He has the serial number (12121) but doesn't know what year the engine was made - he just knows that it is NOT the original engine that came with the car, it was put in to replace the original emgine.

OK... is there any way to determine year of engine manufacture from serial number? The Subaru dealership says no, and I've done an internet search with no clear answer found.

This is ridiculous... why even serial number the engine if there's no clearcut way to find out at LEAST when it was made! Anyone here know of a way?

No way to know definitively, there were at least 3 revisions of the ej22. Piston dish would narrow it down further. Early phase 1 ej22's had a hoof print shaped dish. Then later p1's had a square dish. Then phase 2 motors went interference with flat top piston with valve reliefs. This is all coming from memory, you could probably dig nasioc for more specific information.

what year was the impreza?

i know it was not the original engine but it may help.

was the impreza originally an ej22 car?

it will be on the ID tag under the hood driver side strut tower.

95 was the first year for the ej22 in the impreza, as an option,

and not standard until 98 i think.

look at the exhaust ports where the exhaust y-pipe mates to the engine,

single port = 96 - 98

dual port = 90 - 95.

remove the valve cover and look for valve adjusters, set screw and lock nut,

if yes, then it is 97 - 98 and it will be single port exhaust,

if no, then it is 90 - 95  if dual port exhaust,

96 if single port exhaust.

i cannot identify an obd1, 90 - 94 intake manifold,

as compared to obd2 95 - 98,

but someone should be able to.

the lego went obd2 in 96,

i'm not sure about the impreza.
