Ranfis Posted July 27, 2014 Share Posted July 27, 2014 My 1998 outback AWD makes a noise like a grinding gear and wont move I thought it was the cv axle r/s so I replaced it, istill wont work evidently is something mayor any ideas on the repair needed or can I sawp a tranny from a 1999 forester awd? johnceggleston Posted July 28, 2014 Share Posted July 28, 2014 ok, if a front wheel will not turn when off the ground, in gear, the trans is probably crap. (NOTE: make sure the FWD fuse is in place and the hand brake is on, when you do this test.) if the wheel does turn, repeate the test on the other side. one front wheel in the air. if neither wheel will turn when it is in the air, the trans is carp buy a used trans. if one does and one does not, check the axle on the ''does not '' side. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I forgot to mention that even in park the vehicle will roll like a gear is not connected, I just got a tranny from a 1999 Forester AWD do you think it will fit ? Ranfis Posted August 2, 2014 Author Share Posted August 2, 2014 I found a transmission out of 1998 impreza the numbers are the same as the ones on my tranny ecxept for the last 3 digita mine areTZ102Z2DBA and the one on the impreza is TZ102Z26AA can some one tell me what is the difference and if will it work on my 1998 outback Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
AdventureSubaru Posted August 2, 2014 Share Posted August 2, 2014 It should bolt in but may have different final drive ratios. If the final drives are a match you're good to go. johnceggleston Posted August 6, 2014 Share Posted August 6, 2014 TZ102Z26AA if this number is accurate, the trans should be a match, ratio wise. but this is the first time i have seen an impreza trans ID# like this. based on this number this trans comes from a 2.5L impreza. i'm not an impreza guy , so i'm not familiar with the 2.5L cars. i have only studied the ej18s and the ej22s. what car did the trans come from? if the trans number above is not correct, then i doubt the ratio will match.
