firecog
I have a 2001 outback, 2.5, manual, 188K, the engine went out. I found a good deal on a 2002 Impreza WRX 2.5 DOHC, it has the turbo heads and manifold, but no turbo. The guy I bought it from said they are basically the same engine and a swap would be no problem. Like an idiot I believed him. Took out the old one, went to put it in and realized it isn't going to work. Any suggestions or ideas ?Otherwise, I have a great motor with a warranty for sale.thanks Edited July 27, 2014 by firecog
johnceggleston
depending on what is wrong with you 01 engine, you can probably use the impreza block with your heads and intake. if you can pull an engine, you can move the heads and do the head gaskets. make sure you use the intake, cam and crank sprockets from your 01 engine. these need to match your computer. and no, swapping the computer will not work since the computer needs to match the wiring harness in the car. just use the 01 stuff on the 02 block and you will be fine. idosubaru
trade the WRX motor. or swap your heads and intake manifold onto the turbo block. turbo and NA engines are not interchangeable, electronics, piping, lots of differences. a "good deal" on an otherwise high demand/expensive engine (WRX turbo engine) is often suspect, but hopefully you're lucky. firecog
Forgot to mention that the problem with the original was bad valves, plus it was burning oil, so I'm assuming the whole engine needs a rebuild.
idosubaru
oh right, so heads are toast. get a set of used heads for $100 - $200 and bolt them to the original engine. or bolt them to the "new" engine, you'll have lower compression and lower power using a turbo block in an NA vehicle, but it'll run and work fine.
