BirdMobile
Hi again. Did the trade yesterday - traded away my EA82T Turbo motor for an EJ22 and a Impreza MT/transaxle (which I have no use for). Anyway, the EJ22 does not have an ECU - the guy I traded with doesn't know where it is and says it's unlikely that he'll ever find it again. So... I can either ( a ) modify the engine snd carburate it, or ( b ) Obtain a new ECU for it. Pros? Cons? Where would I even find an ECU, and what will it likely set me back cash-wise? If I carburate it, what carburator should I choose? BTW, the engine is for a swap into one of my pre-'87 GL wagons. Thanks for any input! . . idosubaru
Do you mean wiring harness? ECU's are readily available and cheap, $35 and i''d mail you one. i can not imagine wanting a carb, there are reasons they aren't readily available....nor have been in a quarter century.
BirdMobile
Yes... ECU module and wiring harness. Neither came with the engine. I can do my own wiring, but I need the ECU and maybe the connector plug. $35 sounds great... could you email me? (email addy deleted... email received. Thanks!) Thanks! . . AWD J3wman
Carbs can work but a wise man once said when I called up Weber to help a friend with his carb "Fuel Injection is a science, Carburetion is an art"
AWD J3wman
btw I really like the sound of the unequal length headers on the EA82 over the equal length EJ NA headers

You just need an Intake, Harness and ECU wired properly for a swap. Does the engine have an intake? and do you know PRECISELY what year model it came from? If it has the intake you just need a matching Impreza 2.2 intake and harness... If it doesn't have an intake....you can use any OBD I or OBD II 2.2 intake and ECU up to MY 98. BirdMobile
Yes... engine has an intake. Don't know the year of the engine... only that it is pre-96 (it has dual exhaust ports on each head).

What do the enigine connectors look like? and where are they on the intake? (side, rear?)
BirdMobile
What do the enigine connectors look like? and where are they on the intake? (side, rear?) Photo attached. A black and white squarish-oval connector, 3 pins each. Also a blue 2-pin connector on the end of a cable. 4 red 2-pin connectors, one on each fuel injector. Gloyale
I meant the main, Large engine connectors..... not the individual items on the intake. 2 or 3 large plugs on the drivers side = 90-94 Legacy 3 squarish connectors at the rear (dont' see them in pics) would be 95 Legacy 1 round and 1 square at the rear would be 93-95 Impreza
BirdMobile
Sorry... no other connectors on the intake. Does thia mean I can't use the engine with an ECU? Do I have to add a distributor and carburator to get it running?
Gloyale
You need a complete intake wiring harness. Or just a new unmolested intake altogether. This isn't reinventing the wheel. Carb and distributor are lots of custom work..... Harness and ECU can be had at any junkyard.
comatosellama
81-87 Taurus disty, weber 32/36 carby. Custom work will have to be done. Will only work if you have an older ej22, with the notched cam, check on the rear of the passenger side, there should be a little grommet that you can take off and check. It's gonna be a pita, but that's what I'm gonna do as my wiring harness is in bits from the last owner. I have some answers if you have some questions. I think monstaru might have done this beforeEDIT: I was quite wrong, see monstarus post below for correct info Edited September 1, 2014 by comatosellama

A whole bunch of research went into this already. Don't try to reinvent the wheel here. A lot of time went into figuring this out . LOL It is not a "Grommet" that is removed. It is a block off plate. It doesnt seem you have the proper answers to the questions. I am going to try an get the official thread thing going again. there is too much mystery surrounding this. cheers

(Not trying to be passive agressive or sarcastic). Will edit my post. I'd be quite appreciative if you could get a thread just about this going, my ea81 is being a pain and my wiring harness was chopped to bits by the previous owner.
