not a match.

it will not work.

do not buy it.

you can use any auto trans from the following :

96 - 98 outback,

98 forester

96 - 98 GT

96 - 97 LSi

in that order.

if you use the GT or LSi your speedo will be a bit off.

you can NOT use any auto trans from an ej22 car.

the car wont moove when I put it in drive or reverse but I can hear grinding in the right side  I replaced the r/s cv axle because the old one had pulled apart from the inner axle, since I'm new to Subies is the differential in front of the tranny or is it one piece.

the diff is in the front of the trans.

in the auto trans it is a 2 piece set up,

bolted together to look like one piece.

actually it is a three piece trans with the rear most section controlling / sending power to the rear.

the car wont moove when I put it in drive or reverse but I can hear grinding in the right side

before you swap the trans ,

jack up the left front wheel,

start the car and put it in D (HAND BRAKE ON)

if the wheel turns

it may be your right front axle that is bad.

(but there would also have to be a failure with the transfer clutch sending power to the rear.)

but still worth a check.

power to the rear and power to the front are two different issues.

but if there is no power to the rear,

and you have a right front axle failure,

you are not going any where.

the diffs do not fail often,

and usually only if they run out of gear oil.

do you have a FWD light on the dash?

did the rear wheels ''drive'' the car before the grinding.

how long have you had the car?

how long have you had the car?

how well didi it run before this became problem.

unfurtunately I bought it at an auction in DC and didn't checked til I had bought it so I dont know much about the little wagon I do know that the sway bar was disconnected and for the looks on the fender inner skirt  the tire had been rubbing against it and the r/s cv was disconected from the side next to the differential

the r/s cv was disconected from the side next to the differential

if this is still the case, i would start here.

a disconnected axle will eliminate power to the wheels, front in this case,

if you have an open differential.

replace / reconnect  the axle.

then you should have power to the front.

next, power to the rear.

keep at it.

Hello I have a 2004 Forester XT throwing a CEL code "Shift Solenoid D" as well as the AT Oil Temp light blinking. Its causing me to get stuck in 1st gear off and on. Problem is, the transmission is apparently not from my year car. No one told me this when I bought it.  Several mechanics cannot figure out what year its from, and most are afraid to drop to pan to look at the valve body if they dont know what year the trans is from. I tried replacing valve body from 2nd generation stock XT trans and it doesnt fit.

2 questions:

1. Does someone know how to identify which year/model transmission I have?

2. What year transmissions will fit if I have to replace the whole thing?

3. Where to get a decent used trans that will fit?

Thanks

'04 was a year of change for the 4EAT, could be the month of manufacture is important to figure out what should be in there.

Try going to

www.car-part.com

and look for a trans for your car and see if it asks for the month, and if it comes up wiuth different parts for late/early in the model year.

Thanks. I went to car-part.com but it comes back with "Non-Interchange search using Subaru XT and similar" with no results. No month is asked.

I have not looked @ the bell housing near the starter for that code but I will do that ASAP. Will have to figure out where the starter is first :). Thanks.

you must have done something wrong.

do it again.

my search returned lots of them, 12 pages of them,  including this:

2004

Transmission

Subaru Forester

97K, A.T.; W/O TURBO

97,385

$750

what part did you search for, transmission?

Yes. I believe this happened because I selected USA only. When I removed this it seems to work and I get results, thanks. Still trying to find the transmission code near the starter. I can see the starter but no code on the bell housing. The Turbo radiator blocks my ability to see very well in there. MIght have to remove it just so I can see if there is a code...

OK so the code on the bell housing is TZ1B5LHYAA-1L its throwing the "Shift Solenoid D" CEL code with AT Oil Temp light flashing. I cant get out of 1st gear, off and on. I was told I can replace the valve body, but, when i ordered the 2nd generation from transstar which was supposed to fit the 2004 XT, it did not fit. So does any1 know which transmsisison I have and how to fix this shift issue? Thanks

the code on the bell housing is TZ1B5LHYAA

that is a forester turbo trans,

first used in 03 up through 06.

is your car a turbo?

Yes its a turbo. These codes will help thank you. I next need to find out if the "shift solenoid d" can be replaced or if the whole valve body needs to be replaced altogether. What are the risks of doing the valve body myself. Either way, ill need to identify a reseller who can get me those parts either remanufacired or new.
