CMRedwood Posted August 18, 2014 Share Posted August 18, 2014 I have seen many posts about 2.5 to 2.2 engine swaps what I want to know is this: Can I swap a 98 2.2 engine and manual trans together into an 03 Outback? The Outback is an automatic. I own a 98 Legacy ej22 so naturally I have the entire wiring harness and ECU which I assumed would have to be swapped over. What issues regarding drive shafts, mounts, axles, clutch pedal and cable etc etc would I run into? Would this even be worth my time? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
johnceggleston Posted August 18, 2014 Share Posted August 18, 2014 the issues you will run into are electrical, computer, wiring, sensors, etc. also the exhaust y-pipe. the 95 - 98 ej22 is not considered swappable in to the 00 - 04 cars. better to find an engine from your year group. as for the manual trans, it will probably bolt in but the final drive ratio is wrong, not sure about the other hardware. stick to your year group, 95 - 98 or 00 - 04, 99 is a transition year, address it individually when you think you have a match. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
