jabarrow
Hi, I am looking for a 5-spd manual trans for my 2003 2.5L Outback wagon. Do I have to get one from another 2003, or can I use one from different model years as well? Or can I use one from something other than an Outback wagon? Will one from a sedan work? Thanks james
upnorthguy
I'm sure johnceggleston will chime as as he one of the transmission compatibility gurus around here. You can search www.car-part.com and enter in your info and it does a decent job of showing some of the transmissions that will fit your vehicle. You can't always trust what those salvage guys list, through. Best bet is to know the transmission model number that will fit so you can check. Do some searches in this forum as this topic comes up often.
johnceggleston
i'm not a manual trans guy, so there may be details that i am not aware of. but i have learned there are 2 thing you have to match: final drive ratio and push vs. pull clutch. the final drive ratio is model specific, outbbacks, GTs and forester all have the 4.11 FD ratio in the manual trans 96 - 04. i do not think the push vs. pull clutch changes very much, but the may be some models that are different from others, like WRX maybe???? . but i can say with pretty much confidence, the 00 - 04 manual trans in the outback, GT and forester will all swap.
