igammie
Anyone know if I can use a steering rack from a Legacy Outback (96) in a Legacy (97). I have no idea if there is a difference, I just replaced the rack with a second hand one, which is now leaking. They Legacy OB is the only rack in this area. Thanks! swootton
My parts catalog shows them as different. I think it's only a gear ratio change.
igammie
The Scrap yard told me they were different; from memory I thought they were both 3.2 lock to lock wasn't too sure about the Wheel base but know that the width is identical? Rooster2
Timely that you made this post. I just started shopping yard on car-parts.com for a steering rack for my 98 OBW. All the yards just post "Legacy" racks for sale, with no mention of any difference between Outback and non-Outbacks. I will watch with interest what others have to say, to see if they are inter-changeable.
86BRATMAN
The racks will physically interchange, the difference is strictly the ratio. Outback being slower than regular legacy, if memory serves the ratio is 19:1 on outback and 16:1 for legacy.
