spicypeanut
So I was at my vacation house this weekend and got a tip that there were some old looking Subaru on the other side of town. I make the drive out there and on the side of this guys run down house is not 1, 2, or 3 gen 1 Subaru's. But I counted 7. He had 1 Gen 1 Brat, and 6 Gen 1 Wagons. All in various condition and to be honest, none of them looked to be complete trash. Tired? Dirty? Yes. Save-able? Appear to be! I walk up the the front door (two story house), knock on the door. No answer. I knock again, a bit louder. No answer. I hear a TV on (upstairs) so I knock even louder. No answer. Each time I knocked, I stood back from the door a good 5 feet. The last thing I wanted to do was appear menacing and have the person in the house answer the door with a shotgun. Well, needless to say it was un-eventful as no one ever came to the door. I will be going back there next time i visit but does anyone have any suggestions for approaching someone like this? I would love to roam through and either pick some parts or take one of the vehicles home entirely.

Cali ain't as wild west as it once was but you take photos of someones car stash when they won't answer the door and you may get to see they still have a Colt .45 and not a cold one if ya know what I mean. +1 for leaving a note
moosens
Be sure to mention you are already a vintage enthusiast. Stories like " I grew up with these ..." always help but don't ham it up. I had one nasty old bastid who wouldn't budge and told me I didn't know what he had , etc.... He basically didn't like me "out knowing" him. Say less , but show sincerity. Good luck! Sound like the good old local hoarding crazy guy. Every neighborhood has one.

Scooner
After 4 or 5 months of trying to get a guys attention by writing notes, and leaving him messages...he calls me today out of the blue to talk about Subies. We talked for a solid hour, really cool guy. He has 4 brats and a 81 Wagon. He wants to work out a deal with me which is cool, he was thrilled that a younger guy was so into brats and old subies. He thought the younger generation didnt know anything about them nonetheless appreciate them. I said i know a WHOLE community who appreciates them haha. So needless to say patience prevailed in my case and i'm going to go look at his stash soon, 2 gen 1 and 2 gen 2 T-tops. Good luck on your quest! P.S. He said i could just have the 81' Wagon if i went to get it in another town close to him. Haha the universe has many ways of unfolding.
