smleod
I have a 1978 Brat with an unknown year engine and tranny. I bought it off a guy that was in the process of a swap, but lost his contact info to get more info from him. Question: how do i determine the year and other info from the engine and tranny. I do not have any info for the tranny other than it is a 5 speed manual. I need all the clutch, pressure plate, etc. for it and need to know what to order. The engine is an EA81, but I don't know what options or year it is. I will be posting pics, and resto info as I progress, but need to make sure that I have a rolling chassis first. Thanks for all the help.
Dinky26
Is that transmission a dual range one? As far as engine year goes from what I've learned here is that, it's really hard to pin point what year they were made. The valve covers are one indicator to narrow it down. The distributor is another that can give a range, speaking from personal experience my distributor does not follow with an 86, but of an earlier version 82-84 I think is what we pin pointed down at Car Quest. Anyone feel free to correct me at any point here.
smleod
On the front of the engine it reads "EA81" with "745406" stamped right below it. I assume that is the serial number. Does anyone know where I may be able to find a reference chart? Also, the tranny is a single range with "JAPAN FM-2" stamped on the side. Again, does this give any clues? I have the original engine and tranny with all the brackets, Pressure Plate, Clutch, etc. (some stuff for sale/trade for help). I would like to replace some of these parts while I have it out, but need to get a handle on what part numbers to order. Thanks again for all the help. Gloyale
That serial # would put that engine likely in the 86-87 range for U.S models. Confirm by checking for hydro lifters would mean it's at least an 84 or newer 5spd single range 4wd would have to be from a late 80's DL or 90's Loyale.
