Sapper 157
Ok so I would just like to know if there are any cheap or simple improvements that can be made to my car (1984 GL Wagon 1.8L) to increase the MPG. I have already discovered that keeping my tires inflated can improve my mileage by a good 1-2 MPG, but would like to know if there was anything else I can do to improve it. Along with that, are there any improvements that can be made to better the get-up-and-go power of my engine? I know these are kinda to different things but instead of creating two different topics I figured I would just kill two birds with one stone and ask in just one thread. Any suggestions? rdweninger
There's not a lot of performance gains to be found on the 1.8 OHV. A Weber carb may help with fuel delivery coupled with an EA82 intake manifold. I would start with a compression test to see what you are working with. Use ONLY NGK plugs. Check plug wires with ohms meter and/or replace if old. Check for vacuum leaks.
sumoco
If you're a little ambitious you could install and HHO generator, It's not entirely simple, but it would only take a day or two to create and install, it's bumped my pony power and has consistently gotten around 40-43mpg, and I only have a small generator
spicypeanut
Something like this? http://www.amazon.com/Super-Hydrogen-HHO-Generator-Kit/dp/B00COSC04K Does this actually work, is it safe to use on a carb'd motor? Or a turbo? Damn so many questions bouncing around in my mind right now.
sumoco
Exactly like that, research it a little, there's an insane amount of information. When I get home I'll post the links I've found to be the most helpful.
MilesFox
What ol do you use. Consider a 0w40 over 10w40 to free up some rolling resistance in the engine. Use 75w90 synthetic or semi syn in the front and rear diffs. IF manual trans the fluid MUST be 'synchromesh' or 'extra-s' that has a gl-5 rating
bratman2
I prefer Redline MT90 myself. But anyways doesn't hydrogen, if that is what the HHO eludes to be, take a crap load of energy to produce?
wallaby
5 speed, and a block under the accellerator pedal, get a quiet exhaust - then you won't stomp the throttle to hear it roar..... driving habits are the best way to get more mpg's - i can never do it.....too much of a revhead...

apintonut
I too have had good success's with hho but me saying this open a can of warms some say it didn't work make you own opinion by playing with it but I've seen 75mpg's on non Subaru car and truck from 8mpg to 21-27 depending on driving condition and style...... Or convert to propane and have done with it or diesel engine

I have seen a ton of online stuff and would love to talk to someone who has actually built/used it. I have metal working tools and welders so I can build it fairly easy. you can PM me here. coronan
Care full with HHO. I tried it on my toyota and it ended corroding sensors and valves in my intake manifold. Bench test and filter, Filter FILTER. Edited October 2, 2014 by coronan
coronan
Also, Maintenance, & Tuning, Don't hot rod it if its not running perfect. Zero vacuum Leaks! Then all of the racer tricks. Headers, Larger exhaust, Cat delete or new cat, High flow muffler. Keep your exhaust tip to 2" so you don't get drone. By the time the gas gets there it will have cooled condensed, and not need large diameter. Index spark plugs, side gap spark plugs, Clean Intake manifold. Port Match Intake and exhaust. (these things are free HP)

jono
I asked similar question of how to get more go from EA81 some 15 years ago, and got that there was not much at all you can do - from a Subaru specialist workshop. They ended up selling me twin Hitachi inlet manifold and carbs - these helped once I kitted them out and on a rebuild with oversize pistons and everything fresh. Highest octane fuel has made a difference with my EA82T - from 10 litres per 100km down to 8.7 litres per 100km on highway A cheap and cheerful for EA81 I found was to fit up the exhaust Y pipe from an EA82 , bigger outside diameter pipe, so must be bigger inside the second pipe inside as they are twin tubes. I got an extra 10kph out of third gear, got more torque feel so figure it is gonna give better economy, pretty sure it did give better fuel economy with other EA81 same EA82 Y pipe.. Seen hydrogen kit ~ $200 did nothing but spill white powdery stuff about the joint under bonnet of keenest hydrogen convert out. never revisited that concept again .... wagondragon
I'm very interested in this... if it works. I would love to see a video of it in action from someone on usmb. How do you get the fuel mixture right? Also doesnt it put a drain on your battery / alternator?
sumoco
It does, and I will do a write up on it when I have some free time from work, but what some people have done is fab another alternator bracket, or if you have ac you can delete the ac and put another alt in its place, same with power steering

BoostedBoxer421
another good way to get more power and mpg is to install a good cold air intake, or intercooler in my case. with my engine running cooler than ever before and not getting hot sometimed it gave me an easy 5mpg increase
