kerandt
Greetings all! Have a 1991 Loyale sedan (4wd) with the 3spd auto. Wondering about the leakage as it is getting pretty fumy with the gear oil burning off the Y pipe. It's the driver's side leaking. Definitely gear oil. Has the smell and I have to check the level frequently. Any chance there is a seal accessible behind the axle stub? Don't think I'm willing to pull the whole tranny for what the car is worth to me. Any comments appreciated. -Keith
DaveT
If you remove the a,le, you can see the seal. I have not done one of those yet... but I have replaced seals in similar situations. I've done it 2 ways. Either drill or punch a small hole in the seal. Screw a sheet metal screw into the hole. Pry on screw to pop the seal out. If you choose drilling, be careful about chips and slipping too far in when it breaks through. If you choose punch, be wary of pushing the seal into the case. It likely will only move in until it hits the bearing, but I am not sure of the design of this part of the 3AT.
Crazyeights
You can fix this in the car if it's just the axles seals and o-rings. Pull the front axle first. Next, carefully mark the large nut holding the seal and bearing race in. Next remove the retaining bolt and clamp. Unscrew the large nut and drive the seal out from the inside, change the large o-ring on the outside of the large nut too. Put it all back together, no more gear oil smell coming in the heater! Do put that large nut back EXACTLY in the same position and number of turns for you may risk destroying the ring and pinion gears. kerandt
Well it sounds like there may be hope after all. I'm thinking I will have to inquire about the seal / o-ring at the dealer? I gave rockauto and napa on-line a quick search and it isn't real clear which ones I will need. I'm not going to be tearing into anything right away anyways. Thanks for the tips guys! Update: Did find some dimensions if someone could verify: I.D.(shaft) = 1.063" (27mm), O.D (house) = 1.777" (45mm), Width= 0.315" (8mm). And a couple part numbers: TIMKEN #222745, National #222745, NOK #J7043-180430, SKF# 10666, NOS (Napa) 10666, And . . .thanks for your time Edited October 4, 2014 by kerandt
