'99 OBW

got a 1999 OBW 2.5 liter that made an occasional grinding noise when braking. Wasn't dirt in the calipers (checked) couldn't see any other issues. Recently took the FWD fuse out for the up coming winter months & the noise has returned... I didn't notice it when the fuse was in (you don't miss what you don't hear, I guess) but quite obvious now. Again, intermittent... braking is solid other than the noise so, what's the AWD doing?

the best test for torque bind is probably doing tight circles on dry pavement. If the car will idle thru circles at full lock, forward and reverse, without any jerking of bucking and without more than just a touch of the gas pedal - probably the clutch pack and duty C solenoid are working OK.

 

tires all the same brand/size/model? close to the same wear? trans fluid good?

 

can you get the noise using the parking brake to slow the car? does it happen if you shift to neutral first?

ahhh. Mr. Texan, tests to be applied tomorrow or the next day... (don't think it's torque bind... all tires are of a matched set but, should check all the pressures)... Thanks again for the advice.

any idea what quadrant the noise is coming from?

 

I suppose you looked at the inner pads of the brakes? similar wear to the outer pads? Are you hearing the 'squealer' on an inner pad? usually more scratchy/squeaky-sounding than grinding....

 

after a highway run, might be worth a quick temp measuement at each hub with an infrared remote therm. Might spot a bad bearing.....
