Before all I carried was a shovel, tarp, tent and a flare With the trails I'll be going on I'll need to take recovery a little more seriouse. Winch is out of my price range bout how about a cable come-a-long ? Heard a lot of bad stories about tow straps with hooks so snatch straps with looped ends are the way to go right? s'ko Posted May 14, 2004 Share Posted May 14, 2004 The things that I am getting together are 1) Air compressor so I can air down tires 2) Cable come-along 3) A high lift jack (needed if you have a raised rig and can be used as a come-along) 4) Gloves 5) Tow strap 6) Army Entrenching tool. 7) Mats/carpets for traction. I difinatly roll with my tools! That goes with out saying, i mean it IS a Subaru. I wouldnt leave my driveway with out atleast my Subaru tool pouch Tire kit; like a punch/ream and plugs? northguy Posted May 15, 2004 Share Posted May 15, 2004 A block and tackle is a series of pulleys to increase the pulling strength of your rope. A rope pulling a weight straight requires a force equal to the weight to move it. A simple pulley allows the puller to use only half of the force. Each time you add another pulley you cut the force in half again. So, a pulley chained to a tree with rope running to a pullet chained to your car would require one fourthof the effort to pull your car free. Hondasucks Posted May 15, 2004 Share Posted May 15, 2004 Yes, tow straps with loops are safer, but they are a pain to attach to your car. What I do, is go down to some place that sells farm stuff, and get some tractor eyes (I think that is what they are called -- not sure) basically it is a U shaped piece of metal, with a pin the slides through one end. Loop the U though your tow hook, put the loop in the other end of the U, and run the pin through the loop. I prefer the style with a mouse key (kinda like a cotter pin, but not) because they are a lot less likely to fall out then the kind that just use a spring loaded ball (like a socket wrench) They aren't very expensive, I think under $5 a piece. If you can't find any, I can get you some locally. Next time I am in the farm store I will get a picture so you can see what I mean, they work great!
