naldo Posted October 31, 2014 Share Posted October 31, 2014 Hello guys i have a 05 forester which recently i change the motor on. In the time i have the car it has started to make knocking noise which i think pretty sure comes from the torque converter i am not sure if the rocker arms can make that noise keep in mind that the head where machine shop, but it does the noise when ever i rev the engine or whenever i have the car in reverse of neutral/ stationary at a light. The car runs great shift fine and has no driving problems any idea on what it could be ?? Any suggestions will be gladly appreciated Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

PA Grown Posted November 3, 2014 Share Posted November 3, 2014 Yah add a quart of ATF fluid and use one less quart of oil, obviously. It's a great way to clean out your engine. But replace your oil filter 1500 miles because some of the gunk in the engine will get caught in it and could plug it up possibly, that should quite your engine down if it is the engine. i haven't had any experience messing with Suby transmissions before so I couldn't give you any good advice. I mean I've heard of it, and I'm not saying you are wrong, but it sounds like a backyard mechanic type thing. My opinion is why would it have detergents if ATF fluid is in a non-combustion environment? You are probably just better off using Auto-RX if you want to do an engine flush, or using a good synthetic oil. For me, tranny fluid stays in the transmission and engine oil stays in the engine. But if he wants to pour it in then he can pour some in, to each his own. Again I am not saying you are wrong I know car guys have their own ways. @naldo; I assume you checked the engine oil level? If the car runs and shifts fine I doubt its the torque converter. From what you are describing it could be piston slap. What type of oil did you put in may I ask? Gear oil is like 80-90weight and has lots of lubricant and deter green stuff in it to keep the gearbox clean of any buildup of rust or whatever the hell could start building up over the years in a gearbox. Has the same function in an engine cleans and lubricates. Putting in a cleaning agent is the easiest thing to do if it's any engine noise at all and see what happens. Other option is taking out the engine and cleaning the lifters and shim them if they're worn. Oil detergent like Lucas or ATF fluid would be the easiest place to begin at. I had a lifter tick in my Suby I bought a few weeks ago and when I put in clean oil it went away no oil detergent required. An oil change is always the easiest place to start. It can sound a lot like a loose rod or piston at acceleration and deceleration. with a recent motor change, it's a possibility. A little time consuming but won't cost anything. MilesFox Posted November 7, 2014 Share Posted November 7, 2014 Dont use gear oil in the engine. IF you think it may be lifter tick by particles or aeration, onsider a 0-wt oil such as 0w40. Knocking sounds cabn be from the torque converter to flex plate bolts being loose, if another motor was installed. Also, a flappy timing belt tensinioner can cause knocking sounds with backlash of the belt. A qt of ATF before an oil change is fgood to clean up sludge. So is using quality synthetic oil such as 0w-40. Often times if a motor is consuming oil, it is from sludge in the oil control rings and crankcase ventilation system, more so than being worn out. The heavy additives such as oil stabilizer are really meant for already burned out and knocking engines (overheated, run out of oil) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Txakura Posted November 7, 2014 Share Posted November 7, 2014 My broken drive plate sounded like a rod knock under engine braking. It made a lot of noise on the driver side back of the engine.
