bork
Are all the auto trannies the same in subies approx 1995-97? My 99 imprza L front gear box (diff) seems to be getting louder. Is a SVX the same?
1 Lucky Texan
there might be 2 or more different final drive ratios - hopefully someone will be able to run down the matching models for you.
Gloyale
You can't switch the front section (front diff), without also remvoing the rear of the trans to access the Pinion gear shaft........and also you must remove the Pump body if the pinion seal needs replaced. The gasket that seals the pump body is metal, expensive, and from subaru only....as well as the tube seal and the tail section gasket. You're better off to just get a new trans.
idosubaru
+1 easier to just get a used transmission and swap it. it's rather intensive to do what you're asking. in general though - your 99 is a Phase II transmission and older ones (like SVX and 95-97) are Phase I transmissions. not sure how compatible the front diffs are. if you're still interested in swapping what you want to do is use Subarus opposedforces website to check part numbers of your vehicle and the vehicle you're looking at. see what parts of the ring and pinion share part numbers (if any). your 99 impreza is probably a 3.9 final drive ratio. if you swap the matching rear diff it doesn't matter what front diff you use. you can use any outback/legacy front diff. SVX's are the wrong front drive ratio. you don't want to use hose.

bork
Sorry, maybe I should of told you why I was asking. There is a guy that specializes on SVXs, & I was thinking of asking him, if he can or if he is capable, to adjust (preload) my front gear box, in hopes of saving gears. When I first got car (2 years ago) I had to fix a bunch of stuff, & I think I unscrewed the big lock ring to change seal without knowing where it was positioned, from the start, IIRC. Mine is starting to growl up front when throttle applied & silent when coasting or deaccelerating.(gets slightly louder the faster car goes, approx starts above 25mph). So I'm thinking, I may have messed up. oil is still clean, & no metalic sparkling. So it sounds like the boxes are simalar except ratios,
