91 loyale ea82 loose crankshaft pulley bolt/ possible engine upgrade?

Recommended Posts

I have a 91 loyale with a ea82 right now. Just a few days ago my crankshaft pulley bolt backed out. Tightened it like 3 different times now to 100 ft lbs and it fell out again. Should i just Loctite it and crank it to 125? Other than that black Betty has treated me great.

Also I may be able to con my mom out of a 94 legacy with a ej22 I believe. If I could swap that into my manual trans loyale I'd like to find more info

The 94 is automatic can it be done

Others on here have fought with the loose crank pulley.

A number have also done an EJ swap.  I'm pretty sure you could do it with those cars.  There are a fair number of threads on here about the EJ swap.

They might be in the modding forum?

Yeah just use the blue loctite not the red I just dealt with the same thing with my 92 loyal But the best thing I found is to locate a EA82 turbo crank pulley because it's got a little dowel that also hold it in place it weighs slightly more but it's not enough to really make a difference but always remember use the blue loctite not the red

So I checked my timing just incase. The passenger side belt was pretty loose but still on mark. I tightened the belt up. And put everything back together. Tightened my crank pulley like a mofo and then started her up. This time the bolt didnt come out.... She was still making some weird metallic noises but I decided to test drive her anyway. Everything was good until I started going up hill. Down shifted into third got into some high rpms and then the noise got really bad. And poof we lost power, started smoking, and the engine quit. Popped my hood, oil all over. And a hole thru my passenger side cylinder block. Now the question is can I replace what's broken and be cool or is it a wrap for the 1.8 motor time for a 2.2?

If there is a hole in the block your engine is done and if its just a hole in the cylinder head you can replace just the head and whatever other parts that broke and be good to go but it sounds to me like you had an oiling issue and it threw a rod and if that was the case you can just find another 1.8 block and use your heads and everything else on that engine block

This is obviously somewhat past, but I used red loctite on mine and it came loose again. It took a couple months and a thousand miles but one decent overheat and that red loctite broke free.

Side note, always double check your radiator cap after topping off your antifreeze. Mine didn't QUITE seal :/
