used car
I have a 1987 subaru gl 1.8 liter 3 speed automatic with 4x4 on demand. What type of transmission does it have and should all 4 tires turn when its not engaged in 4 wheel drive. We had it up on a lift and put it in gear and thats what it was doing. What is going on
l75eya
It has a 3 speed automatic and on demand 4wd, lol. Just like you said. The 4wd should not be engaged at all times. Maybe all 4 wheels were spinning just because of some friction and lack of resistance on the wheels.
l75eya
Also if you ever part it out I'd be interested in the 3.7 rear diff, if that's what's back there.
mikaleda
Lack of resistance more than likely. Why are you concerned are you fealing sighns of tourque bind?
DaveT
You can tell if 4WD is engaged with the car on the ground. Find a place [parking lot]] where you can go in a tight cicle - steering wheel at full lock. Idle around in a circle or 2 to get a feel for the crawling speed. Switch on 4WD. the car should slow due to drag / binding of 4WD going around tight corner. If it doesn't change, something's wrong. When not in 4WD, it is front drive only.
