1991 Loyale clutch

So I just started working on a 91 Loyale 4x4 with a 5 speed trans. and 267,xxx miles. I bought it for my little brother  about a year ago and it's been sitting in the back since. Anyway, I got it running the other day and noticed that the clutch pedal doesn't engage until it's almost all the way out. It doesn't seem like it's slipping or anything. I got out and tightened the cable under the hood, but all that seemed to do was make it harder to push.

 

I have no experience working on transmissions or clutches, so I have no idea if this means the clutch needs replacement or adjustment. So, any help is appreciated!

You want about 1/8" to 1/4" play at the clutch fork. If you make the table too tight it's like always having your foot on the clutch pedal. The clutch on my GL has a crappy engagement, too. But it doesn't slip at all. 

 

I'd say if it doesn't slip, just run it. When it's a problem throw a new clutch in. It's ridiculously easy in these cars.

You want to loosen it. Tightening it will make the clutch engage higher. Be careful with the pedal now that you've tightened it, you may have tightened it too far and you run the risk of cracking and bending the fork. Ask me how I know. :-(

It's not too tight, just took the slack out of it. I was just curious if it would be fixed with a new clutch or if there was a certain adjustment to fix it... This will be my little bros first car and I want it to be enjoyable for him to drive. I have always driven standard vehicles and this one is a pain in the rump roast to drive with the clutch the way it is.

I have seen a couple of my clutches do that.....

I just had on eventually go... It went stiff and then

I drove on it for about 30K.... I believe it is something

in the pressure plate.... perhaps even one of the torsional

springs on the clutch has broken and jammed in the pressure

plate....

  The reason I think something is jammed in the pressure plate

is because... One of my Loyale's, (the one that recently the clutch went)

As I was saying had been stiff for about 30K...  Died after I sort of

ended up in a precarious situation where I had to move the car quickly

out of the way.......  So anway,  I was rolling backwards and while

rolling backwards and not coming to a full stop, I proceeded into

first gear to move forward..... The clutch didn't appreciate it....

car has about 260K on it.....

    So there I was with a broken clutch , I couldn't shift into any gear....

I sat around for about ten minutes collecting my thoughts, trying to

be calm and find my way out of this mess without a tow truck or

a tow chain,,,,,....

   So keep in mind at this time.... I can not shift car... I am stuck

on the side of the road........

    So I decided to start the car with the clutch pressed down(disengaged)

and in gear..... I choose reverse only because I was pointed up a slight incline.

The car started, it lurched... the clutch rattled... and she rolled... I did this for

about   30 feet..... then... I was at an intersection that I would have to drive

through in reverse( If I was to get the car back to a safe place to park

and think about this more clearly)

     So now.... I am at an intersection waiting for the light to go green so

I can go through it in reverse.(the car is turned off). The idea is to do

the same thing......( start it up in gear)...

     I get it over to the parking lot... everything went as planned....

except one thing........ The car when I got back to the parking lot

was shifting fine.........  Whew......  I proceeded home.....

   SO as I was driving home... The car shifted flawlessly...

and the clutch pressed in beautifully.... felt all nice and

not hard to push..............

   THe next day I went out to start the car and see what

it was like.......  It was all jammed up..... couldn't shift...

   That was the best Christmas present I could have

received this year........ being able to get that car home.....

   SO yeah, the friction material on the clutch probably

has plenty of life left to it... But, the other parts of a

clutch take a serious beating over the clutch's lifetime...

     At some point you want to put a new clutch and

pressure plate in that car.......

Free play measurements from the FSM;

 

FWD

At the pedal, 13-20mm .51-.74 in

 

At the fork, 2-3mm .08-.12 in

Full stroke 17-18mm .67-.71 in

 

4WD

At the fork, 3-4mm .12-.16 in

Full stroke, .67-71mm 1.004-1.063 in

 

You measure at the fork where the cable meets the fork.

Jono's post made me question what I originally posted. Went back and looked again.

Sure enough, I missed the 4WD measurements.

hmmm, I recall from this time last year - full stroke at cable/fork junction in 85/86 manuals is more like 25mm for EA82 4WD. The EA81 clutch pedal delivers closer to 16, 17mm

 

two lots of conflicting numbers to consider now !

 

I know I got 25mm, strapped a metal tape measure end to fork, strapped tape fixed and depressed clutch to get ~25mm, after I swapped EA81 pedal out for EA82 pedal :)

Could also be a gummed up and/or frayed cable.

 

Stretching while being used, and gummed up inside hte housing.

 

If you replace hte clutch I'd replace the cable too.  Or try the cable first......see what it's like after that.
