DaveT
How I work on struts. The main beam is a PT 6x6. The 2 bars at the top are 3/4" diameter shafts from something. Short piece of Unistrut to keep the top from sliding up the bars. The silvery thing near the brackets on the strut is a pipe hanger slightly larger than the strut, bolted to the 6x6. The jack should be obvious, and is sitting on a piece of 5/16" angle iron, bolted to the 6x6.

skishop69
Ingenious, yes. Scary as hell? Oh HELL yes. Spend the $40 and pick one up online or at Sears. I know one person who was killed by a strut spring and another who need reconstructive surgery on his face because of a strut spring getting loose. I narrowly avoided it myself years ago when a wall mounted compressor let loose and the spring whizzed past my ear. I heard the pop and had just enough time to move my head out of the path of the spring. Not something I'm going to chance. If you're going to use something like this, for the love of sanity and your life, throw a blanket over it while you're compressing it.
