ChestoLegacy
Hey subie lovers, i drive a 96 legacy GT and had transmission problems #torque bind#. i then replaced my tranny with an aftermarket one. I recently had a flat and had to put the small spare tire on and the car was shaking violently while driving. i put it on the front passenger side. i later read about the FWD fuse under the hood which is to used incase of a flat. however when i put the 10A fuse in, the display on my dash is not FWD but it shows DIFF LOCK. my differentials actually lock instead f goind into FWD mode. what could be my problem? MilesFox
Interesting as there is no center diff. The transfer clutches have a bias to be engaged and disengage to allow rotational difference between front and rear axle. Installing the fuse holds the duty c solenoid 100% to disengage the rear transfer clutch keeping it in fwd

lmdew
It's best to put the spare on the rear and the fuse in. That way the two different size tires are not fighting the driveline.
johnceggleston
years ago, i remember reading that JDM subarus, all of them?, some of them? a few of them? had this feature. apparently some one imported an auto trans and the FWD fuse did not work as intended. because the dash display says DIFF LOCK, this is not an accident, obviously, DUH! it may be as simple as cutting power the dutyC instead of grounding out a pin on the TCU connector, or it could be that the fluid flow? pressure? transfer clutch? and spool valve? have been re-engineered to work differently. a similar thing was done around 04 , in the H6 auto trans at least. the transfer clutch works differently, backwards? spme one knows all about this, which member swapped an o4 A/T into an 01 - 03 H6? the fuse causes it to lock up. none of this helps the original poster, as stated, he should put the spare on the rear. and it would be interesting to read the owner's manual to see what it says. Fairtax4me
What's the VIN on your car? Placement of the spare doesn't really matter, and won't affect the outcome of what happens when you put the fuse in. The fact that a "diff lock" light comes on when you put the fuse in says to me that it's working as it is designed to work. If the FWD light came on, but it locked into 4wd instead, that would be a problem.
