brake pedal goes to floor.

Featured Replies

Hello all, I'm new to the subaru world. I have a '95 Impreza wagon. When I bought it the guy told me the brakes needed bled. It does not have ABS, and has drums on the rear. I found where he had put a new wheel cylinder, and hard line on the left rear. I bled it with a vacuum pump bleeding machine, and found no air in it, and the fluid is clean. I bled it criss cross like they recommend, but it made no difference. The pedal goes almost to the floor and doesn't seem to pump up if you give it a stroke or two either.. I took it to a

indy garage and he pressure bled them and found no air and it didn't help. I've noticed on ebay there are beefed up braces for the master cylinder that are for the sport models. My question is this,, could there be something wrong with the master cylinder mounting giving the pedal way too much play?? The car stops, but haven't tried it in a panic stop yet. We have snow now so I don't go very fast, but would like to fix this. Any help would be appreciated.  THX   :banghead:

Many times when people bleed the brakes, they damage the master cylinder by allowing the pistons to go into areas that they have not gone for years.  It wipes out the seals in the MC.

I always put a 2x4 under the brake pedal to prevent this.  If you have a good air-free system the MC is likely.

Likely the master cylinder is failed. I have had enough of them fail in first gen legacys so I would not rule that out. It probably was ran dry then it popped. Otherwise it may need a bench bleed

Thank you both. this is what I was wondering. I really appreciate the help.  It seems that I have something in common with each of you.  Imdew, I see you are a Moto-Guzzi fan, and I have owned a '78 V1000 convert for over 25 years. Don't ride it as much as I used to, but try to get out on the real good days.  Miles Fox,, It seems we have the same last name..  small world huh.  thanks again.  :drunk:

Yep, Moto Guzzi, A&P, USNR, Subaru's, life is good.

Hit the yard and pull one.  Just clip the brake lines.  Make sure you don't push the brake all the way down when you bleed it.
