its_masters
I have a 98 Legacy OBW. 2.5l 5 speed manual. When i'm in gear, either accelerating, or decelerating, I hear a grinding noise coming from either my wheels (sounds like front, but sometimes rear) or my drivetrain. If i press in the clutch, or put it in neutral and just roll, I don't hear it anymore. I just did my front brakes, and I took care of any rubbing up there, I did a gear oil change in november, and have since been trying to figure out my issue. I'm thinking it's the CV's but i'm not sure. The boots aren't torn from what I can see. I'm hoping it isn't my transmission or center/front diff. My heat shields are also loose, and I have told that they could be rubbing on something, but I'm not sure if thats the issue or not. Any help is appreciated! Thanks for reading! its_masters
How many miles? Good question. The ODO stopped at 103XXX. It was working when i test drove it, but it and the speedo quit during the drive. I replaced the speed sensor, so the speedo works but not the odo. Fairtax4me
These transmissions have issues with the mainshaft ball bearing, but not usually at that type of mileage. When you changed the gear oil, how did the old oil look? Later transmissions had some problems with the center differential that can make noise when under load, but I think that was only a thing in 99-00 when they changed a bunch of stuff in the trans. its_masters
The oil looked like it had never been changed before or at least for a long time. Which I'm sure it didnt as the car sat for a while. Also looked and smelled burnt. No metal shavings or anything that I recall seeing

nipper
Does it do that in all gears? How worn is your shifter linkage. It sounds sort of like the car isnt fully in gear and synchros are engaged. Edited January 17, 2015 by nipper

Looks horrid, but other than that okay. My supervisor told me it probably is that mainshaft bearing
bearishly4u
Any update on what this was? Mine is making the exact same noise.
its_masters
Any update on what this was? Mine is making the exact same noise. My guess is bad input/output shaft bearing. My noise is getting worse. Im doing a trans and diff swap next week
