Gloyale
Hi all. I am looking to setup a 3rd eye light with a DPDT relay setup. This will be in an '81 model year, EA81 wagon. So positve switched system with glass fusebox. (EJ swapped w/internal regulator ALT.........but that doesn't/shouldn't affect the lighting setup) There was a writeup in the old USRM on the indysworld server......but sadly the link is now 404. So i am looking for info on this. Where is the factory timer box located? Anybody got specs on this? I've got an 82 model Serivce Training Update that has a basic diagrahm of the Lighting w/ third eye......But it is showing the Ground switched setup of later model type......with the 3rd eye as an auxillary Hi beam, rather than a "passing" light which can be turned on anytime. And it has no wire colors, or locations of connector pinouts. This is useful.....and I can post a scan of it for others.....But I really need to find good info on the early setup, where the timer is, and how to bypass/replace the original with a DPDT switch or relay.... I will make this a Write-up with info and diagrahms thorough. If I can get it all compliled and figured out on the test rig.
Crazyeights
I have a factory center lamp setup including the relay and switch - not sure of the year or system style. I can't figure out how to wire it up, I'll admit it's been low priority. I'll box up the relay and switch and send them to you for loan if that will help out. I just ask for it back someday with what you have figured out. You can take it apart and see how it's wired up. I started this and then life got in the way for years I think I have a copy of the indyworld diagrams too if that will help. hippyloc
I would like to see that diagram. I have an 81 GL that I put a 97 OBS 2.2L in. Now I am trying to iron out wiring issues. It has a factory passing light setup, but I have used the entire 97 wiring and have to wire light independantly. Alas I am not electrically inclined. So if you can post the diagram or PM it to me Crazyeights, that would be so very awesome. I will PM Crazyeights or Gloyale in a couple days if I don't see anything here. Gloyale
Okay. Update. Got the factory relay from Crazy.....it was useful. I also happened across an 83 Factory FSM Full Book all 6 sections!!! A friend that does all new Import Repair on Euro cars had the FSM sitting unused in his upstairs.....I asked to borrow it he said take it and keep it!!! Anyhow......After lots of reverse engineering and interpretation of schematics......I concluded the "timer" unit is an overblown 87a relay (standard bosch, Single throw, Double pole) So I am working now on posting pics, video, and a diagrahm with wire colors. I actually plan on 3 diagrahms. One for simple switched, One for "key on" switched so you can't leave it w/ key out, and one for alternately switched by Hi or just ON. Gloyale
Okay Here's a few diagrahms. First one is simple switched operation independant of any other wiring in the car. And also this simple version runs the actual load of the lamp through the switch, not the relay.....so you must use a switch that can handle the load of the center lamp (About 5 amps) Now here's a more complicated setup. First off it uses 2 relays, one for lamp load and one for door operation. Also, in this setup the first relay is triggered by the running light +, so you can't leave it on w/ key off. Additionally there is a toggle that allows the user to select "always on" independant of headlights, or to come on with the "LO" beam......or "HI" beam whichever you preffer to have the center lamp on with. Diagrahm shows "LO" connection **No idea why Photobucket made them pink. They were done on white paper and color scanned, and are white in my files on the computer. Photobucket uploaded twice and both times went pink......ughh. Okay.....now they are not pink? IDK..... Important note......the Black/red wire and the Green/orange wire at the lamp unit get looped back toghether....shown more clearly in the first diagrahm. Also in the second one I forgot to show the Lamp and Motor black wire going to ground. Look at the first diagrahm to see example.
