Nate E.
I have an '83 GL FWD w/ power steering & want to swap in a manual system. I have the manual rack. I've dug around the interwebs & it looks like I might need the manual crossmember. Is that due to mounting differences and/ or different holes and reliefs for the P/S lines? jono
there was a difference of some sort, but sure it is OK to go one way, maybe not the other. I used a PS cross member in my manual steer Brumby no problems. I think one has a bolt in brace on the underside of the xmem and the other not.. Your PS may be worth somethinng even if it needs overhaul, it and long neck thermostat housing
Nate E.
The PS system works just fine. Just working on simplifying the car and more go juice for the wheels. It's such a small car that I feel no power is needed for steering. I'll eyeball the existing PS crossmember more and give some feedback here. turbosubarubrat
I will trade you a manual steering rack and crossmember. I notched the passenger side because i was running a header but kept the piece i cut out, so i can weld it back in and grind down the welds. Mine has to come down anyway so i might as well swap to power, since a 6" lift plus 30" or so tires would be a good idea to have.
Nate E.
@TurboSubsruBrat Well, I've already got the rack. Not sure when I'm gonna do the swap. Have in mind to do struts/ball joints/steering rack in one fell swoop, followed by an alignment. I'm looking for EA81 engine stuff, so I'll keep you in mind for the PS system. Got anything? You in Portland area? NE
turbosubarubrat
I'm out in Sandy Oregon so i'm fairly close to you. I have 3 ea81's. One would be a drop in, it ran fine but had the tick of death over 200k not sure when head gaskets were done it it either. I think the lifters are worn because they are hydraulic or the oil pump needs rebuilt. Another has a blown head gasket 170k and the last has a stuck valve 161k. Also have lots of other ea81 parts: carbs, intakes, exhaust, emission parts, heads, ect.
Nate E.
Awright, you're talking my language. Gives me incentive to get that rack swapped. Not sure of a timeline on my part yet. You officially have first dibs on my PS system. Nate Edited January 15, 2015 by Nate E.
