palfer
Looking for ideas as to what could be the cause of my oil pump leak. Changed the crank seal and crush washer and re-sealed with anaerobic sealant. still had a small leak present on the bottom of the timing cover. Took it apart a second time. No evidence of leak on the crank seal and crush washer was appropriately in place so figured I didn't seal to the block well enough. Went to ultra grey this time and reassembled. Still very tiny leak present--frustrating. Was thinking I of trying a new pump, maybe there is something wrong that I can't see. Has 160K miles. Any suggestions? thanks
Fairtax4me
By crush ring you mean the blue o-ring? Are you sure its coming from between the pump and the block? Not one of the big allen head caps on the bottom? Someone recently had a brand new pump that was leaking from one of those caps.
idosubaru
describe precisely (or post pictures) where it's leaking. there are no "crush washers" associated with the oil pump - what do you mean? there is one case (pun) of a guy having a porous area of the block and it leaked through the metal of the engine block. i believe it was close to the oil pump. did you tighten the backing plate screws? not that these should cause a leak though. palfer
used the wrong word. Replaced the little o-ring on the pump. Did tighten the backing plate screws. See pics. Can see the evidence of the lead on the timing cover gasket just under the bolt. Again, its not much. Just annoying since I've done the job twice now. Fairtax4me
Is it a consistent drip when the engine is running? It looks like its coming from the front side of the pump and running down out of the timing cover. Pull the timing over off and clean that whole area thoroughly with brake cleaner then blow it dry with compressed air if you have it. Then start it and watch closely for any oil running down the front of the pump.
lmdew
Look at the oil pressure sensor up top. That may be the source of you leak, running down the pump face.
