scatgo
Tighten the cylinder head bolts as follows: Step 1: Torque all the bolts in sequence to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm). Step 2: Torque all the bolts in sequence to 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm). Step 3: Loosen all bolts in sequence by 180 degrees, then loosen an additional 180 degrees. Step 4: Tighten all bolts in sequence: 40-45 degrees. This is the information I found online for my 1999 SOHC engine. I have dealt with a few head gasket jobs and the torque specs were somewhat higher and I never had to loosen all bolts 360 degrees in two steps. I broke a 1/2 inch drive ratchet that i needed to use a cheater bar on to get the head bolts loose because the were very tight so these specs just don,t sound right. What do you people think? Fairtax4me
No that's not correct. The loosening step is correct, but the final torque sequence is not. Tighten all bolts in sequence to 21 ft-lbs tighten to 51 ft-lbs Loosen all 180 degrees Tighten bolts 1 & 2 to 25 ft-lbs tighten bolts 3-6 to 11 ft-lbs tighten all 90 degrees tighten all an additional 90 degrees Put a small amount of engine oil on the end of the threads and on the washer. scatgo
Thanks. Something just sounded wrong with that info. Peace
Fairtax4me
Service manual actually says to loosen 180° twice ( 360° total), but there is really no need since the bolts are completely loose after the first 180°.
987687
This is for a 2000, but same thing. It's a sohc 2.5, all the FSMs up to 2004 use the same sequence and specs. Look on the last page of this PDF for the torque sequence and instructions http://raig0.planet.ee/subaru/Legacy%202000%20Service%20Manual/ENGINE%20SECTION/Engine/MSA5TCD00L16124.pdf
