wagonist
on the gearstick. If you remove the centre console, there will be a bunch of wires hanging off the base of the shifter. The safety switch is the one which joins the 2 thickest wires (usually BW & BY)

wagonist
Manuals have a neutral safety switch in the US? I know later gearboxes have a neutral switch on the trans. I think its on the left side behind the reverse light switch.
Gloyale
Manual trans do not have a Nuetral "safety" switch. There is a switch, on ether left side of trans, that tells the ECU when the car is in a gear, or in Nuetral. However this has nothing to do with starting the car and is not a "safety" feature. It is merely to help the ECU control idle and fuel cut during off throttle coasting.
soopsoop
ah that makes sense,is that why i can start my car in gear? is there a switch on the clutch?
nipper
Well lets not be so pickey about names An automatic in a subaru has an "inhibitor" switch. This tells the car what gear it is in Manuals will have a clutch switch of some kind, and sometimes a neutral safety switch on the transmission. More modern manuals may even have some sort of switches to tell the computer what gear you selected. Someone may have bypassed your clutch switch. Not uncommon.
