1985 Wagon Gold Mining Trip Ends With 106 Mile Tow

Thanks Turbosubarubrat!!  If you had went with 8" would you have needed custom length axles?

Do you need them with a 6" lift?  Do you know of someone who is familiar with rebuiding and rebooting axles?

I shouldn't say the axles can't be rebuilt since you could probably find the joints somewhere but it's cheaper buying new ones. I can get new not rebuilt axles from Oriley's for $50-60 with life time warranty. If the axle boots are just torn and not making noise i would just reboot and grease them.

With a 4 inch lift you don't have to buy longer soft brake lines or another way is to extend the hard lines like i did. Patrick didn't even have to modify his shifter linkage so that might be the kit you want.

For the axles are you talking about the REAR axles too?  I looked on Rock Auto and ZERO axles were listed for 1985.  The 4" does sound ideal and is where I would like the wagon to end up.  Today I ordered the rear coils and shocks to do the rear end like JesZek did on his wagon.  He said those coils cause a 2" lift and I would be needing a block to drop the differential that 2".  So now, if I get a 4" lift kit will these coils and shocks not work with that? .......I could still cancel the order before they ship. 

I am trying not to buy any wrong parts and pieces.  And my plan would be to get some larger wheels, to redrill, so then I would have a much better off road tire selection than with the 13s.  Thanks again!!

...1) Subaru XT replacement shocks on the front with the Ford Tempo coils like you did...

 

Remember, I had to use front XT shock absorbers, because the ones that were on my Wagon, were worn out; so, if the ones on your wagon are Alright, you don't need to change those, only to change the Coil Springs.

GREAT.....what a relief!!  My front shocks and coils are old and tired also.  So after the rear end is done, but not immediately, I need to do the fronts also.  I figured I would follow your whole recipe Jeszek :) and use the XT shocks.  Then once the front and rears are done including the lift block kit parts, I want to start planning on what wheels and tires.  I like the way TheLoyale's Safariwagon wheels and tires look.

Hey Tom (TheLoyale), what a thread you have there!!  Stunning how much you have done and really great work!!  With my wagon my worst rust issue is around the windshield and a spot behind each rear wheel, under the two side cargo compartments (each side has a golf ball sized hole).  So my rust issues seem a lot less than what you started with.  But, as far as everything else you have done WHICH IS AMAZING AND STELLAR....I don't think I am going to go to that extent with my wagon. 

I'm on the fence about just trying to sell it for a little cash and get a newer used 4X4 with better stock clearance and better tire choices.  .......This is my dilemma now.  On your thread I saw how much higher your wagon was and all the work you had to do including different wheels and tires.  I'm thinking about "retreating" with the plans for the lifting because I'm not going to go all the way like you have.  Now the Honda coils are on the way and I need to reconsider what to do. 

 

At this point I'd be happy just to get it functioning, as it was, with my wagon wheels but be able to load the rear and roof up with more gear than I was before.  Your thoughts on this would be helpful.  I will post this also on my thread.  Thanks again and cheers.  Aaron
