I live in Syracuse, NY.  I bought my 2006 Impreza in June from Bill Kolb Subaru in Orangeburg, NY.  The dealership covered the cost of repairs of the first immediate problems I encountered (by a nearby dealership, Romano Subaru).  When I turned on the ac recently, I got nothing but hot/warm air.  Pep Boys diagnosed this as a compressor problem after attempting to charge it and replacing the O rings.  They estimate a $1,200 to $1,500 repair.  I would probably have his done at the nearby dealership.  Is this a common problem?  Is this something I should have expected to pay on a new (to me) car when I only used the ac for two months?

You didn't buy a new car, you bought a used car.  It doesn't matter where you bought it, unless it came with a warranty.  And if you bought it in June of last year, then it isn't there responsibility at all.

Look for a local Subaru shop (not the dealer), hop online and find a compressor and it should be able to be fixed for under a grand.
