lstevens76
Ok, so the engine in the OBS is coming out next week if I can do it. Although the Blue Devil bought me some time, it didn't full seal the leak. I've been driving a ticking time bomb for the last week with my son and that is just nerve racking worried if it's going to make it the 13 miles to take him to school, then back, then to pick him up, etc.... In my other thread I talked about a possible knock, which may be lifters and I need to take that into account as well in my parts now. I want to be able to pull this and do it in two days. I do not believe the knock is the lower end so I'm only doing an upper end rebuild. If I start having problems with the lower end I'm considering just getting an EJ25 block and swapping my upper end over, but hopefully that is a long ways down the road. So, here is my parts list. I believe I need to ad some more to it, to be safe, but that's why I'm asking. 1.) Head Gasket kit. I'm going with an Evergreen/Mitsumo. I know they are cheap but I've had good luck with them in the past and right now I need cheap. The link to the kit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MU3JZGA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A131HE22U4WT5U 2.) TB/WP/Tensioner Kit - Again going w/ Evergreen but with the Aisin water pump. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NLLH74C/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A131HE22U4WT5U 3.) Plug Wires - NGK http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C5O1N0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER 4.) New Plugs (again) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B6R00U/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2IS69AN9A0OWP I already have a brand new bosch oil filter for it and a radiator on the way (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UMFTRC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). The radiator probably won't be here until after I redo the upper end, unfortunately. Fluids are a local purchase, so are not on this list. What other parts should I realistically have on hand? I own all the tools to do this by the way, and I've done head gaskets before so I do know what I'm doing. Thanks
ocei77
Although you may have had good experience with Evergreen, I would not use them for this case. The EJ25 requires an MLS type of HG. Subaru HG are only about $40-45 ea. from the dealer, online even cheaper. Six Star or Cometic would be my next choice. Use the Subaru HG designed for their turbo, part ending in 642. Gates T belt kit with pump sb about $200.. This is not where to go cheap. What engine do you have in your car? The 99OB had a dohc ej25 while the kit you listed is for an Ej22! You do not need head bolts. You will need the exhaust, intake manifold and probably the VC gaskets. You will also need the cam seals. A little more searching will show better quality parts. O. The only part on the TB Kit that I'm even hesitant on is the tensioner. This is a '96 OBS w/ a 2.2L. I said I would use the "short blocK" for a 2.5 if I end up with lower end issues. As for the head bolts, it's been hot a few times. I figured I would be better off with them then getting them out to discover there are problems. Fairtax4me
If you buy that gasket kit, ditch those cheap rump roast head gaskets and buy Felpro head gaskets separately. Felpro head gaskets for that engine have the Fuji "check" logo stamped in them. They are OE parts for half the cost of going to a dealer. Usually can be picked up at autozone for about $25 a piece. Other parts: Separator plate. If its plastic, replace it with a new metal one. About $40 for the kit with new screws from a dealer. It's an updated design so you do need the new screws. I think Dorman is making an aftermarket version now for a little cheaper. Seal with anaerobic or Ultra grey RTV. If it's already metal just reseal it with one of the above sealers. The access plate o-ring on the back of the block. They harden and crack and will leak like a seive. Replace the o-ring or remove it and clean thoroughly and seal with RTV. Coolant crossover pipe o-rings. They get old and cruddy and will leak coolant. Replace and coat them with Indian head shellac and they'll never be a problem. Easy on those bolts because they can snap if you torque on them too hard. Bypass hose elbow. The one that goes to the thermostat housing. These are the silent killer. It blows out and all of your coolant dumps out before you even know it. Get one from napa for about $5 or the dealer for like $8. Dealer hoses fit perfectly and require no trimming. Upper and lower rad hoses are a good idea to replace as well. Can be done later but you gotta take them off anyway so might as well replace them. Remove the oil pump. Check the backing plate screws, make sure they're tight. An impact screwdriver is good for this. Reseal with a new o-ring (purple/blue color) best from a dealer. Use anaerobic flange sealant to reseal. RTV can break off in small pieces and clog the feed ports for the rocker shafts and starve the lifters. Anaerobic doesn't do that. 14mm 12 point 1/2" drive socket for the head bolts. Most other gaskets and seals should be included in the kit. lstevens76
Ok, this seperator plate that everyone keeps saying to replace, anyone have a picture? I want to locate it on the engine so I know what people are talking about.
montana tom
Behind the flywheel , use an impact screw driver to break the screws loose or the heads will strip.
Fairtax4me
http://beergarage.com/SubySeparator.aspx The access plate I was talking about is the diamond shaped on the opposite side of the crank.
montana tom
I believe that one is piston pin access, and was tight tight on my 2.5, you will definitely want an impact screwdriver . The o ring was hardened and leaking.
lstevens76
This order is going to hurt the bank. Ok, so I updated my parts list, but note this isn't just HG work stuff either as I need the sensor and the blower motor (might need a relay as well, but won't know till the motor's replaced). Evergreen TB Kit with Aisin Water Pump and a new tensioner: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NLLH74C/ref=ox_sc_act_title_10?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A131HE22U4WT5U NGK FX 41 Spark Plug Wires: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C5O1N0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_9?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER NGK Irridium IX Plugs (4 Pack) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B6R00U/ref=ox_sc_act_title_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2IS69AN9A0OWP Purolator Air Filter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VAODBQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER Standard Motors Cam Sensor (mine will intermittently fail causing a no start, then work again) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C7ZRJ0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER Evergreen Complete Engine Gasket Set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007P748YU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A131HE22U4WT5U Purolator Fuel Filter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C6IX1A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER New Subaru Metal Oil Seperator Plate: (that took some tracing down to get the right part number) There are also 2 aftermarket brands, including Dorman, making these. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BI6JNAI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1MM6MK6TUHTXN TYC Blower Motor http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GOG3LU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER Fel-Pro Head Gaskets (x2) Just the head gaskets: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C2AFU6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER Other than Oil, Coolant and some good silicone sealant I think I have everything covered. Just to note, I don't pay shipping so if your looking at these take that into account. I will be placing the order when I get home tonight so it ships tomorrow. I have an Amazon Prime Membership so I get Free 2 Day shipping and although I could order from RockAuto, the shipping pushes the order up higher than I spent here. :-/
lstevens76
Well the order is placed. $579 later, not including oil, coolant, and getting the heads milled/cleaned. :-/
idosubaru
good job - those cheap headgaskets often last a year or less - you'd probably get the same miles out of them as limping along the current failing gaskets.

Oh, I bet those cheap ones would outlast the seeping one when done right. Why? Because I've had them in a car before and I know they can go 30k when installed correctly (at least 30K since that is when I sold the car). But, I plan to keep this car well past 30k and the 2.2L are considered solid engines so I'm going to do the HG w/ what is supposed to be better quality (I've not always had good luck w/ fel pro) and see.
