oil pump removal??

Recommended Posts

hey guys a 1980 1.8 automatic, is there anything else that holds on the oil pump besides the 4 bolts? i have the crankshaft pulley off to replace the frt. oil seal and was going to replace the oil pump gasket while i was there. took off the for bolts and tapped it all around with a wooden mallet but it feels like something else is holding? thats my question of the day, thnx for any assistance.

hey bb, i should have explaned more. you shouldn't pry between the "plate" and the block.{i learned the hard way} i use a small pry bar ,a block of wood[for a shim] and pry off the "horisontal cap bolt afair "[over flow valve?"]on the front of pump while pulling up/down on the oil filter. use wd40 ect and baby it off. i've even filed the "plug" to make it easyer to install.tape off holes in pump so no filings get in.its worth the work .the seals are usualy hard and break in your hand. as long as you didn't break off one of the "ears", clean up any nicks so it fits flush.and you could get by. good luck todd

I have broken a plate on one too! It takes a lot of patience and finesse to get those suckers off without breaking them. Just take your time and your best bet is to try and tap it loose as much as possible because prying it is more likely to break it. When I broke one I wasn't even prying between the plate and the engine, I was just prying and the plate was so stuck on that it cracked in half (and I am a girl so obviously those things are fragile). Of course, I am exceptionally buff for a girl!
