The Dude
I have a 2006 Forester with an AT. Does the external transmission filter have a replacement interval? Thank you.
Rooster2
Somewhere I read, change the filter at 100K mile mark. I bought a used Outback many years back with odometer at 148K miles. It had never been changed. I changed it myself, cost abut $35 back 7 years ago. Prolly a good idea to change the ATF three times to get a good drain and fill. Only about half of the ATF can be drained out. The remainder stays in the torque converter, so 3 fills and changes after a brief drive between changes is a good plan to follow. Don't drop the tranny pan looking to change a screen. That screen never plugs up, and replacing the pan without it leaking is always a concern. john in KY
100k is correct. Make damn sure when you replace the filter you also remove the gasket. Changed the filter in my 08 Bean and didn't notice the original gasket remained in the housing. Blew out a couple of days later. What a mess. wtdash
Hi, That filter is 'maintenance-free' per FSM: NOTE: The ATF filter is maintenance free. 1. Lift up the vehicle. 2. Using the ST, remove the ATF filter. ST 498545400 OIL FILTER WRENCH I'd recommend an Aux. Trans cooler. 1 Lucky Texan
your call. Our OBW has a filter. I plan not to touch it unless; the transmission case is ever opened, incorrect fluid is ever used, there is a problem that leads me to believe the filter is the cause. don't use just any filter that fits, it's more of a screen inside and is unlike an engine oil filter.
