jaimosier1
Hi everyone I'm new here just picked up a 2002 subaru forester in trade. Now I test drove the car a week ago and no issues. Today when I pick it up and bring it home. It runs like crap. It hesitates bad in 1st gear seems like it has not enough fuel. Then it picks up and I shift into 2nd and it bucks and surges. It does this in every gear. When your on the highway it surges and you can see the rpms go up and down as its running. Cel is on I checked it today as I brought it home had code 0301 for every cylinder 1 2 3 4 had a code for bank 1 sensor and also showed a code for a small evaporated leak. Any ideas on what maybe causing this? Please any help and ideas where to start or possibly what is causing this and how to fix it it greatly aappreciate this is now my only transportation and I have a young child and I don't feel it's safe to drive him in this car. Can anyone give me some advice and or help please. Thank you very much!!!
Fairtax4me
A tune-up is always a good place to start with any new car. Spark plugs and wires, air and fuel filters, PCV valve. What are the code numbers for the evap and O2 sensor?
1 Lucky Texan
did it rain recently? maybe bad plug wires arcing. I suppose it could be bad gas - did this start after refueling? post a new thread asking for a shop recommendation near your city. You may need a good mechanic to check it out. jaimosier1
It did all this on my way home and it was sunny and warm. It sits idea is very rough and low to the point it wants to stall. And when your driving no matter what speeds it surges and backs down almost like it's starving for fuel and it bucks and jerks at times and it does it everyone you run the vehicle

Fairtax4me
Did you buy this car from a dealer? Any warranty on it? Codes matter big time. There are about a dozen different codes for those two systems. Some are totally benign, others cause big problems.
jaimosier1
No I got it from a private party trade. The one code I remember was the p0301 for each cylinder which is a misfire and it said cylinder 1 and it had a misfire code for each cylinder which I would assume is bad wires and then I remember a reason showing up for a small evaporated leak which I was told could be the gas cap. And then there was something about bank 1 and it running to rich just don't remember the exact codes. I should wrote them down
AdventureSubaru
Yeah. Start with new plugs and wires. NGK brand is recommended on these cars because they last 4 times longer than most other brands. That may very well solve the issue. PCV, fuel filter are next on the tune up list. If the problem persists, it may time time to look at the fuel pump
