86BRATMAN Posted May 5, 2015 Share Posted May 5, 2015 The trans code you posted is the same as what I took out of my 99 legacy GT, you cannot use any transmission older than the 99 model year. They are electronically incompatible. I'm not the best at deciphering the auto transmission codes, but I believe the one you have as a replacement is the wrong gear ratio, and also a phase 1 trans which won't work for you. AdventureSubaru Posted May 5, 2015 Share Posted May 5, 2015 yeah, you'll be wasting your time trying to put that 98 trans in. You're looking for 1999-04 Outback, Forester or Impreza RS automatics most likely as they will be same phase and likely same final drive ratio. You can use Legacy and Impreza phase IIs so long as you also get the rear differential to match and swap that in. Get the final drive for your trans (probably 4.44) and make sure whatever trans you get to replace it is a match by checking its code before you purchase. 86BRATMAN Posted May 5, 2015 Share Posted May 5, 2015 04 will require additional work, subaru inverted the polarity and function of the duty c solenoid. flowtom Posted May 6, 2015 Author Share Posted May 6, 2015 Thanks for the fast replies. I'm thinking that my 1999 is more like a 1998 outback. phase 1. Im just learning about phase1 and phase 2. I understand that external trans filter is phase 2. I pulled moter and trans out of a donor. Should have keep my original trans. however, the TZ102Z2DCA (97-98 Legacy GT) electronics fit perfect. I know that 99 was a change over year. I think im living in the past. I found lots of trans code info on the TZ102Z2DCA (97-98 Legacy GT). and not so much on the TZ1A2ZJEAA They look very similar. As for the final gear. 4.44 was used on most outbacks? and GT's? In the past i have jacked up the back end of a 4 runner and counted wheel rotations to get rear diff gearing. 86BRATMAN Posted May 6, 2015 Share Posted May 6, 2015 (edited) All 99s had phase 2 transmissions, 99 Legacy Outback and GT still had phase 1 engine electronics though so you may be getting confused there. Been dealing with subarus for 18 years and I've never seen an exception to that. The wiring may plug up but it will not function correctly. The easiest way to tell what phase the transmission is would be to count the motor to transmission bolt holes, 8 is phase 2 and 4 is phase 1. There are also several cases of a phase 2 transmission not having the spin on filter, some markets go slight variations. 86BRATMAN Posted May 6, 2015 Share Posted May 6, 2015 There are 3 speed sensors on phase 2 transmissions, all on the left side of it and they are integrated into the transmission harness. The replacement trans TZ102Z2DCA (97-98 Legacy GT) has only one speed sensor. My current bad trans has the three sensors and more wires coming out of it. Plug looks simmilar but not so easy to see. Delayed engagement into drive and reverse is very common in the 99/00 automatic transmissions, and it can be fixed by a mechanically competent person with a few seals from the dealership for not a lot of money. flowtom Posted May 6, 2015 Author Share Posted May 6, 2015 it started out on a wet 3 hour drive. I went through a clover leaf freeway entrance, about a n hour into drive. in the turn motor rpms went high and car slowed. as i intered freeway things returned to normal. driving at freeway speeds couldnt tell there was a problem. exit of freeway into city and car was really slow to move. rpms seemed normal. slowly parked it as it was barely moving and it smelled hot. not an engine oil smell but i figured trans oil. later drove it 20 min. home and it was impossible to park it. the trans oil looks clean and not burnt on inspection.
