92 Loyale No spark to start when hot.

Recommended Posts

My 92 Loyale has been acting up lately. It starts fine when its cold or been sitting for more than an hour or 45 minutes. If its hot, especially after sitting maybe 10-20 minutes, it wont start. It cranks over normally but at this point, I'm getting no spark from coil wire. I did replace the coil today but its still the same.

What next?

distributor,

inside the distributor, and no im not talking about the rotor, take the rotor off and under it theres a plate covering the distributor, take the plate off and theres a metal disk that spins with a sensor detecting all the little holes this metal disk has, thats the sensor thats failing on you. ever wondered why theres 4 wires comming out of the distributor? no not the spark plug wires, just regular plain wires, this sensor is like an inch by a 1/4inch, little rectangle held on by 2 phillips, put an ice pack around the distributor and it will last longer before it kills itself. i had the same issue where it would "warm up" and it would slowly kill itself after being on for 15min or so, wait 20-30min for something to "cool" and would start right up, but if it just killed itself, no matter how much i cranked on it, it would never start up no matter what unless i waited a while. You either have to replace that tiny sensor from one at the junkyard or buy a whole distributor for $200 at O'reillys.

i fried my distributor because i washed the engine. did you wash your engine or did it rain recently? theres a seal that seals between the distributor and distributor cap that probably rotted away after 20+ years of age. i silliconed mine shut since you can buy everything distributor related except that stupid seal.

or it could be the modulator square thing that goes with the coil, replaced that with a junkyard one but that didn't fix the issue, the distributor did. it is located on the same bracket as the coil is attached to. dont strip the 2 phillips screws :)

thanks. I've got access to a junkyard loyale so I'll be pulling those parts if not more. I cleaned some connections on that module below the coil. It had a little corrosion most likely from some bubbling out the coolant catch tank from an old head gasket leak.

mine were so corroded and rusted that when i tried removing that circle module electronic piece with the 2 pins (whatever you want to call it) the pins ripped out of the module and i broke it since i had to jam a flathead inbetween just to remove it. so take the whole thing, not just the circle electronic, the risks are pretty high compared to just cutting the wires and splicing them back together or soldering them back on your vehicle. but my bet is that tiny sensor with 4 wires comming out of the distributor that reads the slits on the spinning metal disk.

yes, the little gasket between the cap and distributor is folded on one side so I'll come back with silicone after I replace the other piece. And yes, when I washed my motor, no start til it dried out. Sure hope that parts car is still at the junkyard. Theres really not many of these old subarus around my area.
