physically - a LOT (might be trickier to fit it in some cars older than 2000 or so but, it's been done), that basic engine (EJ) has been used up until the FB replaced it - say - 2012 or so. (depends on model and of course domestic vs foreign markets, etc.)

main issue is, if it's going in a car set-up for a 2.2 or a turbo or a 6 cyl., would be the wire harness and engine management.

Yes. Will fit into 1999-2004 Imprezas. You will probably want to swap intake manifold over. I just did the reverse and put a 99 EJ25 SOHC Impreza motor into a 2002 Outback. Wiring was a little different with MAF vs MAP sensors which is why you should swap intake manifold if crossing one to another.

 

Would be pretty much drop in for 2000-2004 Legacy and Outback and Baja through 05. 1999-04 Foresters

 

Possibly some other 05s and newer.

 

A handful of 1999 Legacies and Outbacks got these motors as well. If it came with a Phase II motor (EJ25 SOHC) it is compatible. If it came with the DOHC it is generally not considered compatible although it has been done.

 

In order to fit one into a 98 and earlier you would have to adapt the intake manifold in some way as a bunch of the wiring, throttle body, etc. changed and wont swap between the two. At that point it usually becomes easier to just find a 1990-1998 motor and be done with it.

 

So the easy answer is anything 2000-2004 with a handful of 99s. (Excluding the stuff that came with an EZ30 which would be a lot of rewiring.)

 

The other curveball is that 03 (I think) and newer you would want to swap the crank pulley and drivers side cam pulley from the original motor onto the newer one. TIming marks on the back are different so the computer wont understand the previous ones. Same thing as JDM swaps.

The fitment matching of the crank sprocket and the left cam sprocket began in 2000.   FYI. 

As builders, we also have to match the EGR, manual vs. auto oil pump and mounting for the PCV valve.

is it impossible that a 2002 or 2004 automatic outback wagon 2.5 could go into a 2005 impreza RS 5 speed sedan??

It will definitely FIT, but you may need to swap the Intake Manifold (MAF vs. MAP and EGR), and obviously the FW/Clutch disk/PP  (and new pilot bearing) for the 5-speed and the cam and crank sensors were rumored to change around 2003?

(EDIT: cam and crank were '00 per 'ccrinc' above....but that's the earliest I've ever read???)

I made an error....

I want to put a 2002 or a 2004 (I have both as parts car--prefer to 02 motor tho) into a 2004 Impreza (not a 2005

But the 04 and 05 imprezas look the same--so I am guessing it may not matter that the one I am looking to buy is actually a 2004?

 

I am nervous to buy this 04 impreza with the blown motor as we have emissions here in NY and I don't want to do a lot of work and it ending bad....

Any other experiences would be great to hear about.

Hi, Bill!!

 

As long as the critical things match (left cam sprocket, crank sprocket, EGR, PCV fitting) you can put either the '02 or '04 into that Impreza.  Now, the one thing that's iffy, is that the 2005 Impreza (and Forester) had a one year only water pump.  Just those 2 models, that one year.  HOWEVER, that water pump will fit onto any 02-04 block. 

 

Also, if the Impreza is a manual, you will need an oil pump with the timing belt guard.  I think you should be golden here if you pay attention to these things.  The sprockets can be swapped from the Impreza if necessary.

in 04 they started adding the EGR back to the 2.5 sohc engines so you will have to swap the intake and drill/tap the head for the EGR pipe. there's already a small hole where you have to do this so its not too tricky.

I've swapped a few motors now between manual and auto and vice versa. The timing belt guard is something I consider optional. I at least wouldn't limit the motor search by manual or auto. If you're concerned about it, just swap oil pumps. To my knowledge there has never been a case in which timing was trashed for lack of that guard.

That guard prevents the belt from jumping time if the car rolls back even a little, which all manuals do if you don't set the e-brake before getting out.   If it jumps too much, valves bend and bad things happen.  I've seen it happen.  Dealers are especially bad about rotating an engine backwards when installing it and putting on the flex plate or clutch parts.  Of course, they always deny it.  The tech simply forgets that "clockwise" is backward when working on the back of the engine.

 

Plus he already has the 2 engines: everything I said was so he could match them up the best way.

To answer:

I'd encourge you to get the HG done on any used Subaru engine

 

FYI: You're bumping an old thread - 7 years old. Better to start a new one. 

Swap / Interchange info is readily avl. on all the Subaru Forums.  And remember  that the Impreza, Forester, Legacy and Outback shared almost identical engines for most model years.
