idosubaru Posted May 24, 2015 Share Posted May 24, 2015 the head is stripped or the threads are stripped? if the bolt heads are stripped, us rust prone northeasters deal with this stuff like all the time: 1. use 6 point sockets - 12 points round stuff off 2. use a metric or standard size socket that's a hair size smaller and WAIL it onto the bolt with a hammer - then remove them. 3. use a chisel:a. knock a "V" shape into the edge of the bolt head oriented such that step B is aided b. knock the side of the V that will "unloosen" the bolt with a chisel 4. grind, cut, drill the head off, remove carb, then deal with the studs 5. weld a nut to the top of the bolt heads and then use a 6 point socket on the nut Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

moosens Posted May 24, 2015 Share Posted May 24, 2015 Lots of us have the old spare box of nuts and bolts etc. from our parted Subarus. I'll check mine later today for you. But likely you'll be heli-coiling those holes. Heli coils are great. But since this is regular maintenance for you I suggest to use a Time-cert or equivalent. TOONGA Posted May 24, 2015 Share Posted May 24, 2015 Yes you can remove the studs that hold your carburetor on you will need a set of locking pliers / grips and a lot of penetrine or something similar. Normally I use 2 nuts tightened together on the stud to remove it from the manifold but as they are stripped the locking grips / pliers will be your best bet. They should unscrew with a bit of elbow grease, most people suggest warming the aluminium before trying to loosen the stud. You should be able to find replacement studs in a good auto parts store.
