DSwanson1
This is my first Subaru. I just bought a 1989 GL Full Time AWD Turbo. I got it for $750 which doesn't seem like that bad of a deal. So far it doesn't seem that bad. a few minor issues (I hope). Shifts kinda hard and the shifting is delayed until 3000+ rpm at times even under mild acceleration. I also noticed that after it warms up it sputters a little at idle and the oil pressure gage drops. And of course there is the electric window issues that I have read about. At least the driver side window seems to work fine, albeit a little slow going back up.
Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Welcome! Maybe the automatic transmission only needs a Flush, and fresh fluid to go. Does you subie have the 3AT or the Rare 4EAT automatic transmission? I kindly suggest you to change all the Rubber at the Engine Bay: Timing Belts, Vacuum Hoses, Coolant Hoses, etc, The EA82 is a Durable Engine, But Not on its Turbo form, Turbos are more prone to Fail, so take care and it will Last. Do not forget to share Photos with us, we love Photos here. Kind Regards.
Subasaurus
how low does the oil pressure gauge drop to? i know its hard to read the exact psi but if its around 8-16psi while idling at 800rpm your fine, the reason it drops when it warms up is because the oil thins out when hot, perfectly normal, but if its near zero as in 1-8psi, then its either time for a new oil pump mickeymouse seal, or if the previous owners didn't do the oil changes when they should have, then time to replace the whole pump, don't strip or break those bolts! ask me how i know.. but before all that, do an oil change and see where that reads. Loyale 2.7 Turbo
... the reason it drops when it warms up is because the oil thins out when hot ... Sorry for hijack this thread, but that info above is Backwards. A good multi grade oil will actually Thick as is gets Hot, to fight Shearing. Also, Thinner oils runs at Higher pressure than Thicker oils. zombieblues
My oil pressure went up to 75 after changing the oil to a 40 W 50 or something real thick. The Napa lady said thicker would be better...
Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Not always a thicker oil will be Better. Newer cars with closer tolerances needs oils in lower viscosity grade, such like 5W20. I bet that you used 20W~50, that is good for the EA82 during Summer times ... ... I use that number since the car was new in 1985, Because I live at the eternal Summer somehow. Kind Regards. DSwanson1
I am unsure what tranny I have but I will try the tranny flush and see if that helps. The oil pressure dose drop pretty low but I dont think it gets under 10 psi. I will pay more attention the next time I get it warmed up an see. The guy I bought it from told me he just did a standard tuneup and oil change on it so maybe he went cheap. I will probably go ahead and do an oil change myself here soon. Any guesses as to why it tries to die at a stop? Also I started it up this morning only to have it die right away on me for three times. On the third I gave it a little gas for a while and it stayed running. Left it running for a bit and then started to hear a lifter ticking. Not happy about that right now. PS the previous owner had some issue with the "Start" cycle on the ignition switch and bypassed that to put in a push button for starting. Not sure if that is gonna have an effect on the car or not. And I will take your suggestion about the under hood rubber as soon as I can afford the parts. Waiting to start my new job so money is a little tight right now. Loyale 2.7 Turbo
Just looked up the VIN and it looks like I got lucky and have the 4EAT tranny That is Great, your subie is from the Rare ones. Share a couple of Photos with us! ... The oil pressure dose drop pretty low ... Left it running for a bit and then started to hear a lifter ticking. ... Two things regarding this. The first thing, is that you must be aware, that the EA82 engine is prone to develop a T.O.D. (Tick of Death) sound with the Hydraulic Lifters, they are really Warning you that there is something Wrong with the lubrication system; usually the seal that goes between the Oil Pump and the Block, known colloquially as "Mickey Mouse Seal" is the one that fails, because it gets Hard as it ages, and under certain circumstances, it lets Air to get into the oil torrent and thus explains the sound; but then, here comes the other thing: My oil pressure went up to 75 after changing the oil to a 40 W 50 or something real thick. The Napa lady said thicker would be better... You might went very Thick with your Oil and your engine might not be "Accustomed" somehow. Or was it a thick, Monograde oil perhaps? ... ... Maybe you can switch back to 10W~40 which seems to be the most preferred viscosity number for the EA82's, also let us know which oil filter you used. Also be careful to use the proper Automatic Transmission Fluid; I kindly suggest you to use Valvoline's "Max Life" which is formulated for High Mileage transmissions; I've used it in several different cars, with great results, but I always pour half pint of Lucas "Transmission Fix" additive. Finally, I kindly suggest you to start writing the Maintenance data of your Subie, in a small notebook... dates, numbers, amounts, etc... Kind Regards. ► Edited to fix misspelled words. DSwanson1
So I am assuming by your post I should just go ahead and do an oil change and replace the oil pump seal and hope that it fixes the ticking noise. I took a video and everything so once I figure out how to add those I will. I plan on doing an oil change using 10W-40 oil and a Bosch oil filter. Tranny fluid is another thing I am planning on but I have to be able to afford it first. I think figuring out the ticking noise should take priority. DSwanson1
Another update. I went out to take some pictures and I notice a little red light on the dash. Started messing around with it and low and behold peeled some electrical tape off where the check engine light was and it was on. The shady things some people do to hide the check engine light. Subasaurus
got that harsh tick when i did my oil pump, it almost sounded like a knock, don't know why it did it but i took out the oil pump, put it back in and it went away, worked on the oil pump months later and it came back and would not go away no matter how many times i pulled the oil pump out (might have been a coincidence) so it pissed me off and i replaced all 8 lifters from a 60,xxx junkyard vehicle and that fixed it, and while i was in there, fixed a bunch of other things. btw your windshield wiper motor has been changed
DSwanson1
Yeah I noticed the junk yard markings. I am hoping that I can get the knock to go away. Im gonna pick up the oil pump gasket one of these days and do an oil change with some good 10W40 and see where I am at
Subasaurus
do an oil flush on your next oil change, to clean things up inside, note: oil flushes spoil your oil and filter, so do it only when you are going to do an oil change.
Loyale 2.7 Turbo
...Not sure what is supposed to go here. Its on the driver side up by the firewall ... Those Plugs are there for Testing purposes. By the way, your Subie has the "Outboard" A/C compressor, that might be a Panasonic one, instead the most usual "inboard" Hitachi one. I'll like to see Photos of the interior ... Your Subie does look Nice. Kind Regards.

If you do an Oil Flush using a "Motor Flush" additive, Don't forget to pour it at the place where you'll change the Oil & Filter, just pour it onto the old oil, then start the engine and keep it at idle for around ten minutes, but follow the instructions behind the Bottle; then shut off the engine and immediately, drain all out, change the oil filter.
