lmdew
I just picked up a 97 OBS project - 281K - Clutch was totally out, the center had broken out of the disk. A cheap clutch for sure - I put a good clutch in, the trans shifts fine, up and down but will not go into 4th. I have not checked the linkage yet. - The Trans input shaft did have a little play, but not bad for 281K I'm thinking a used trans, but thought I'd ask. Thanks, Larry
Fairtax4me
Bad mainshaft bearing would be my guess. Lets the shaft walk fore/aft and it knocks the center out of the clutch hub. 4th is usually the first gear to go when the bearing goes bad. lmdew
Repair this trans or replace it with a used one? UPAP trans are only $125 and not to hard to find, so I'm thinking replace the trans and then when I have more time I could split this one and see how bad things are inside. 1 Lucky Texan
281K? - I'd find a used trans
Fairtax4me
Easiest to pop a used trans in it. The bearing costs about $65 IIRC, then you have to tear down the trans, press the old one off and the new one on. A good 3-4 hours between disassembly cleaning and reassembly. AdventureSubaru
4th gear goes first. This seems typical of how a 5mt dies. I'd find a good used one as well. OBS should be same final drive as most legacies. As I recall just about anything that came with a EJ18 or EJ22 had the same final drive. There's a chart for 5MTs somewhere that's handy to print and take to the junkyard to confirm the trans code and final drive.
