the goat
i was just wondering why there seems to be a much larger subaru population on the west coast than on the east coast. when searching for soob's for sale online most are on the west coast and it seems many (not all) of the members found here are in the western half of the u.s. any thoughts? i am a proud soob owner here on the east coast and thought i must be misplaced. Partsman
Older dealer network (closer to Japan)? More mountains? More hippies? No salt on road to eat away sheet metal?
northguy
All of the aforementioned things may very well be true, but the East coast has Moosens, and that about evens the score.

Adam N.D.J.
This is whot I've heard talking to a few of the dealership guys. A lot of it has to do with our large western world shipping ports. Most of the stuff from asia and the pacific ring come in through either Seattle or the large ports in Cali, and a bit into Portland. Back when Soobs were being shipped to the states, they would hit the west coast, then it was up to dealers to have them shipped around the country, seeing as how back in the 80's there wasn't too much shipping back and forth across the country as it was a bit expensive, only a few Subaru dealer were on the east coast, and they got more plentiful as you move west. As far as over here, we not only had LARGE dealerships, but also small Rural dealers that usually stocked 5-10 subaru's tops, most had small signs hanging out front, and usually one maybe two may garage. I ran across one of these out in eastern Oregon, or whot was left of it, it was a gas station like building, with a small sign (maybe 3x2 feet) on a small pole (bout 10 feet). Talking to the locals there they said it was a dealership that shut down in the late 80's. Was really kewl. So thats why we have the Subaru superpower over here. I mean, whot are the odds of picking up an 83 GL Brat with no rust for 100 bucks over on the right coast?
northguy
I see your Moosens and raise you one PK Davis, one Dr RX and one Subaru Junkie. I see. And judging by posts following Eric's, I see there is certainly some regional pride in members as well as our vehicles (and rightly so). My point is proven: there are outstanding members and great human beings wherever Subarus are found. And as for AK, we have Snowman, and a couple of other characters. So there! beachbum
hey goat, i think (besides the pride) its just the terrain and the weather, soobs r known for how good they r in those conditions:banana: but like u im down here also and every once in awhile we get to sneek in on the beach or up by lake city to do some playing.later
ShawnW
I see your Subaru Junkie and raise you a Syrinx....at least till he moves back. Just kidding though. I think its the rust (or lack of it that is) but also...some big name guys recruiting people to USMB. Austin, Ezap, Qman, John Bloom (Mudrat), Bratsrus1, West Coast Subaru Show/PNWSEC and many others on the west have brought MANY people to this board. The true diehards of the East/Midwest that run around putting business cards on windshields and tailgating every Brat/Wagon in town till they stop...just cant keep up. The biggest promo USMB can get is a lifted Brat/Hatch, etc running around with a USMB sticker on it. It just draws so much attention. Almost as much as a mint Brat in the midwest does. Not to mention a lifted mint brat. Im going to go thru a LOT of business cards in Colorado after I move. Theres a huge population of Subaru's there but not on USMB and I am going to find all the nuts!

djhellan
I have to agree about lack of road salts being the main reason for plenteous Subies in the NW. Also we don't really have 4 seasons, just 2, Spring and Fall.
moosens
Rather than wizz back n' forth 'n get all messy.Sales numbers-I wanna see some sales numbers please. From 1968 through 2003 if possible. I'm going to bet the east is at least very close if not beyond the west in sales. People just don't keep cars as long here.Except one guy flying down PA I-78 at 90mph in a 1978 wagon. Dr. RX
Thanks Zap, but the list of west coasters is very long, and I wouldn't want to leave anyone one out or bore the east coasters wish a large post, so I won't post it. There is regional pride, and that goes deeper then just west or east coast, but the most important thing is our pride in our ride, Subaru.
bratman2
I am here on the east coast and we own three Subs, 87 Brat for almost 7 years, 93 Legacy fwd 3 years and 2003 Legacy 1 year. I guess you could call us odd. Visiting my oldest daughter in Colorado, that is were we bought the 2003 Leg, I would say they are the Subaru capital of the US. Sitting on her balconey sipping coffee and eyeing Pike's peak in the morning every 20th car or so was a Subaru passing by on the four lane below. I think the drier air out west also helped stretch the life span of older Subs. It was kinda of like being in Subaru heaven, the Colorado Springs dealership had 120 new Subs on the lot back in July of 2003.

s'ko
I was raised in Virginia and I don't remember seeing that many soobs on the road. In So Cal there are a good number of older soobs, but the newer Impreza, Legacy models are by far the most common. Old/New, East West, it's all Soob and it's all good. Sweet82
I think I'm the only Gen2 in Utah. They all dissolved from the salt:mad: There is some good though.....................? At any given intersection in the entire city you will find at least 3 Subarus! It's weird! At the busyest intersection in town or a neighborhood stop sign. At least Three Subarus! And there are 38 USMB members here.......so how come I'm the only active one?
