mr. bliss
Hi All, time for an emission test! Pretty sure we're in good shape, just had a catalytic converter put on....but was wondering: How much is an Oxygen Sensor and how hard would it be for me to change? Im pretty good with cars and wonder if its not something I should just change if its not to expensive...or should I have a mechanic do it? Any thoughts on passing emission's tests in general would also be appreciated.. Like I say, the car is in good shape and passed a few years ago, but Ive heard lots of horror stories also, so just thought id go in prepared. Thanks! frag
Cannot give you advice on the rest, but, since you have the same engine as mine, replacing the O2 sensor is easy. If your waistline is not too large, you just bend over the right fender (passenger side) with an open wrench of the right size (dont remember exactly but take the new one as a reference) and the O2 sensor is easily reachable just under and to the back of the inner right front axle boot. Good luck!

One trick I have used before is to run the tank down to 1/4 and put in 4-5 bottlles of HEAT. I have had a few older subaurs fail, did this and passed with flying colors. hohieu
Alternatively, I learned today that you can also access the O2 sensor quite easily from the front passenger wheel well. This, however, requires that you remove the front right tire and secure the vehicle with a jack stand or cinder block.
